    Mets Mets Finally Sign Perez

The New York Post reports that the Mets and Oliver Perez have agreed to a three-year, $36 million contract.
A fine deal for the Mets. In last year's market, Perez would have been in line for a five-year contract, possibly one worth $70 million. It's quite possible he won't prove to be a $12 million-per-year pitcher, but on a three-year contract, he's well worth taking a chance on at this price.
I am completely shocked to see Perez get $12 million a year in today's market. Perez's career has been a model of inconsistency over the past seven years. He's got a power arm and the wildness to go with it. The Mets needed him though so that might be why they had to overpay for him.

He's a 27 year old lefty with electric stuff, he was gonna make over 10 million per even in this market, especially since Lowe made like 14-15. Not a bad signing if you ask me.

That's why Lowe makes more. Perez got (and arguably deserved) a similar contract to Carlos Silva.

Lowe didn't make as much as he should have, that's the point.

Silva shouldn't have gotten the contract he did and Perez got more than he deserved. Paying so much for average pitchers is just wrong. Mets are used to it all starting back with Kris Benson's deal. That's how guys like Silva and Padilla get contracts like this. Lowe made what he should have. $15 million for Lowe is more than fair.

But the point is that once a Silva sets the market, it doesn't matter if he deserves it, Perez than deserves more, and any less is an insult. So, maybe it's too much in your mind, but for the market, it's more than fair.

The Mets and Kris Benson set the market. Thanks $12 million for an average pitcher is not fair. Just because one GM makes a monumentally stupid signing should not dictate the market.

But once he does, and the agents for other pitchers convince other GM's to go with that market value, it gets stuck.

Mets were the only ones really talking to Perez. They held all the cards here.

They were the only ones with serious interest, but Arizona and Milwaukee had spoken to Perez earlier, as had at least one other team. Maybe they never intended to sign him, but they could have. I don't think the deal is as bad as you think it is.

I remember saying that about the Barry Zito deal. Its bad but not as bad as you think.

I don't think it's bad at all. You clearly do. Plus, Zito is locked up for more years. I don't think that a 3 year, 36 million dollar deal is that much of a risk, because honestly, who wouldnt take a chance on a 28 yr old lefty with that kind of potential?
