Rumor Mets attempting to acquire J.J. Putz

    Ken Rosenthal says:
The Mets are working to acquire a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez — and that setup man would be another closer from the American League West.
J.J. Putz could be headed to the Mets in a three-team trade with the Mariners and Indians, according to major-league sources.
Mets right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first-base prospect Mike Carp would be in the deal, as would Indians outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
It is not yet clear which players are headed where.
And this too from the Star-Ledger:

The Star-Ledger has learned that the Mets and the Seattle Mariners are in serious discussions on a trade that would bring Seattle closer J.J. Putz to the Mets in exchange for reliever Aaron Heilman and minor-league first baseman Mike Carp. Putz would serve as the primary setup reliever for new closer Francisco Rodriguez and would fulfill the Mets' desire to have a setup man with experience as a closer.
Two people close to the talks confirmed them, requesting anonymity because the deal is not yet complete. One of those people said he believed it was a three-team deal involving the Cleveland Indians, which could mean more players would be involved from the Mets' end.
Wow, this came out of nowhere....

Clearly Omar Minaya is serious about retooling this bullpen. Let's see if they can get this done

If we can deal Heilman, Endy, and Mike Carp for Putz, I will celebrate!

What is up with this league when you can trade Aaron Heilman to get the likes of J.J. Putz or Huston Street. It's mind-boggling.

I can't explain it....but I'll party like hell if we get Putz for this mediocre package.

According to this, Mets would give up Smith and Heilman, and get back Putz. Decent deal if you ask me, although I like Smith....

Not even Ned Colletti would make a trade that stupid. Yeah, let's get rid of our closer for Aaron Heilman!

Re: Mets attempting to acquire J.J. Putz

LAS VEGAS -- The Seattle Mariners sent right-handed reliever J.J. Putz to the New York Mets on Wednesday night as part of a three-team, nine-player trade with the Cleveland Indians. The blockbuster deal, which is the first for Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, was confirmed on Wednesday night by a Major League official.

The Mariners receive right-handed pitcher Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman Mike Carp from the Mets, along with outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from the Indians.
Putz, who has been involved in trade rumors for several weeks, becomes the eighth-inning setup man for new Mets closer Frankie Rodriguez. Second baseman Luis Valbuena will go the Indians, who also get right-handed pitcher Joe Smith from the Mets in the deal.
Mariners right-handed reliever Sean Green and center fielder Jeremy Reed also are going to the Mets in the trade.
    It is done

Awful, just awful. The Mariners gave up the three best players in this trade and got jackshit in return.

    There's more to this deal:

As well, the Mariners get three more minor leaguers from the Mets, right handed pitcher Maikel Cleto, outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and left handed pitcher Jason Vargas.

Vargas never amounted to anything, and I've never heard of Carrera or Cleto.
