Mets Mets laugh off reports they have any interest in signing Barry Bonds

"The Mets have an immediate hole in left field, and a lineup currently devoid of power with multiple sluggers sidelined with nagging injuries. But asked last night if there is any remote merit to stories suggesting a pursuit of controversial slugger Barry Bonds is possible, a high-ranking Mets official insisted there is no interest in taking on the monumental baggage - which includes charges of perjury and obstruction of justice - stemming from the out-of-work home run king's involvement in baseball's ongoing steroids mess."

Yeah, Mets getting Bonds is stupid.

Lofton is still out there and would be cheaper and more reliable than Bonds.

Umm, not only would the Mets not do this, but why in god's name would Barry sign with the Mets. The NY Media and fans would destroy him. He would walk into the clubhouse with 3 holes, and leave with like 20. Forget syringes, someone would probably attack him.

That would be pretty classless from the NY fans/media and yet New Yorkers wonder why people outside of NY think there crazy/stupid. Way to honor the greatest player of all-time New York.

It's happened all over the country, and all I'm saying is that NY fans are among the most stubborn. The worst for him would be Philly, because they would probably shoot him. NY fans wont accept him because of all he's done. If he starts a fight with his 2nd basemen here, he'll get run out of town, because that's not how winning baseball works. If he wants to be his egotistical self, he can go back and f*** up your giants for another year but we in NY want to win. He's not the greatest player of all time, he's probably the greatest HR hitter of all time, nothing more. The last 5 years, he can't run, can't field, can't stay healthy. He's not Willie Mays, he's no Babe Ruth, he's just not.

What the hell do you know about him starting a fight with Jeff Kent? Have you ever read into what actually happened? Instead of assuming? And if NY really wants to win then adding Bonds would be the key, Beltran and Delgado are struggling this spring, also they both strikeout allot and they don't hit for a good avg. You really think you can win when two of your "power hitters" avg 100ks each and a avg BA? Bonds hasn't had 100Ks since his rookie year, last year Bonds by the all star break led the Majors in OBP, he finished with a .480 OBP, while Delgado and Beltran avg in the .350's. Also since 04, Beltran and Delgado cant stay healthy as well.

Bonds would sign with the Mets because his best friend in the game plays there (Alou) and they have a damn good chance of winning a WS. And no Bonds never started a fight with Jeff Kent. Bonds did start a fight with Jim leyland.....17 years ago!!!

Re: Mets laugh off reports they have any interest in signing Barry Bonds

Minaya will not sign Bonds, because it would be stupid. Bonds is not a good fit. The Mets are a running based team with little use for another lefty. We have 3 switch hitters (Reyes, Castillo, Beltran), and 3 lefties (Church, Delgado, Schneider). We are finally learning that offense isn't everything, but even if we felt the need to go out and get a slugger, we definitely don't need another lefty. Even more so, not one who can't run, would be an immense media distraction, and will probably ask for a ridiculous amount. He's the same player as Moises Alou, except a lefty. He's slow, he's a mediocre fielder at best, he's injury prone, and he's expensive. He's the opposite of what the Mets should get. And if you ask me, I just don't see NY as the place for him to go. He would be much better off with a team like Oakland, or even better the Royals where the media won't rape him.

Bonds would be a better fit in jail than in the mets. and the NY media IS classless, where have you been? that's the way it's always been. just ask A-Rod. Bonds would not fit on the Mets, let alone any other team

Ruth and Mays couldn't do those things their last five years so maybe Bonds is like them. Regardless of what you think of Bonds, he is right up there with Mays and Ruth.

The difference being that Mays and Ruth were not indicted on perjury charges and clear steroid users.

And if you really believe the Omar Minaya hispanic stuff, lets think about this: he signed Wagner(white). He re-signed Wright(white) for more money than Reyes(hispanic) got, he traded Milledge for Church(white), and Schneider(white). Instead of letting Ramon Castro(hispanic) start at catcher, he went out and got Estrada(hispanic), but then let him go to give Schneider(still white) the starting job. The hispanic guys that Minaya has brought in (Alou, Beltran, Johan, Pedro, Oliver Perez) were all guys (except maybe Perez) who no one in the world would say were bad signings. And even then, Perez was the same kind of trade as Maine(white), they were throw ins, not the main acquisition. Maybe Minaya does bring in a lot of hispanic players, but you have to realize that it's not like he bring in hispanic guys who are clearly inferior to non-hispanic options.

    Ruth used a corked bat.

And I was being sarcastic when I said Minaya wont sign Bonds because he's not hispanic.

Ruth was an American hero. I don't think you can really compare Ruth to Bonds....

Bonds is a great HR hitter, but I don't think you can really believe that Bonds would fit well in NY, it's just not a place that has anything good to say about him. He's hated here, much like everywhere, but here, fans are quicker to kick your ass as a player. I just don't see it being a good fit at all.
