A Sad Way to Start the Season -- Herb Carneal Died This Morning

Herb Carneal, one of the long-time voices of the Minnesota Twins died at his home this morning of congestive heart failure. He was 83.
    Here is a story:

On a personal note, I had a chance to talk to him on several occasions. He was easy going and pleasant, never short or too busy to talk. He would go out of his way to sign an autograph, shake a hand, pose for a picture, or just flash that huge grin for you. One regret I have is that I never got a chance to have him autograph his book "Hi Everybody" for me. It is a good read for anyone interested in Twins' history.
    Rest in peace, Herb.

Heard this on the radio a little while ago. Herb's voice not only gives me some great memories of the Twins but also of my grandfather. In the summer, anytime I was at my grandparent's house and the Twins were playing, you could bet money that the radio was on and there was Herb Carneal with the call. Herb's voice has always reminded me of my grandfather who passed away 20 years ago. If it's possible, I'd be pretty sure that my grandfather would be the first in line to buy Herb a bottle of beer in the afterlife.

RIP Herb. A great announcer and a MN icon.

Herb is calling Kirby Puckett's name as we speak. Herb had a great way of calling the players names. Puckett's was a favorite of mine. RIP Herb.
