For losing A.J. Burnett, the Blue Jays received just a sandwich pick and their compensation from the Yankees was bumped down to a 3rd round pick.
Maybe the Brewers reconsider signing sheets now even with the injury? Say a 3 year deal for 7.5 per so they can get comp for him?

The system is flawed. While I do not shed tears for the Brewer as they were playing with fire and relying on variables that could not be relied on, it does show a weakness in the system. Personally I think an alternative should be explored where a team would simply forfeit their 1st round pick in the next season should they sign two type A players. That would be taking a great risk as they would not know how they would finish and possibly might give away a very choice draft pick, so most teams naturally would avoid this route and it would curtail free agent signings of the elite cash teams. I am sure better solutions could be thought of, but for rare cases like the Brewers, it shows how flawed the system can be.

It's ironic, because it works both ways. It also hurts guys like Varitek and Juan Cruz, because no one wanted to give up a first round pick for them, despite Cruz's usefulness.
