I am curious to see what the Brewers will do if Cordero goes elsewhere. Turnbow may have first crack at winning the job, and only by default.

The Brewers and free agent Jason Kendall are negotiating with an eye toward getting a deal done this week.
The Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt doesn't believe the Brewers would bring in Kendall with the idea of pairing him with Johnny Estrada. If they do land Kendall, they could part with Estrada for a lesser prospect (to the Mets?) or non-tender him next month.
He's coming off surgery but still don't see why they would just non tender him. He probably can get something rather than nothing.

Well so far so good. Yanks accepted the other offer...Coco is here to stay for now.

Hmm don't know if I would like that. Estrada is a hard worker and I'm sure he'd do whatever he could to keep his spot.

Jason Kendall and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a 1-year contract.

They traded Estrada to the Mets for Guerillmo Mota. Trading junk for junk. Maybe a change of scenery will do both players justice.

Time for fans to show support for Turnbow. He is going to need the vote of confidence from the fans, team, and coaches. You can do it T-Bow!!!

Jason Kendall is guaranteed $4.25 million under the terms of his deal with the Brewers.
Kendall can earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses next year: $100,000 for 110 games, $150,000 each for 120 and 130 games, $150,000 for 100 starts, $200,000 for 115 starts and $250,000 for 130 starts. His club option for 2009 would become guaranteed at $4.25 million if Kendall starts 110 games next year, $4.35 million if he starts 120 games and $4.6 million if he starts 130 games. Any 2008 performance bonuses that he earns based on games -- but not starts -- would be added to his 2009 base salary.
That is a lot of money for a guy who can't hit his weight. Brewers would be smart not to let him start 110 games next season.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that the Brewers and David Riske are close to an agreement on a multiyear deal.
Olney didn't have the terms, but Riske figured to get at least $12 million for three years. While Riske has a reputation for wilting under pressure, he's been a very durable and reliable setup man through the years. The Brewers figure to keep him in that role rather than turn over closing duties to him.
Damnit all to hell! Two relievers I wanted the Giants to get are now gone, Percival and now Riske. Riske is a good set up guy for whoever will be the closer.

    Re: Brewers Off-season Thread 2007/2008

Brewers GM Doug Melvin confirmed that the Nationals offered him Chad Cordero for Rickie Weeks and that he turned it down.
Melvin insists he won't part with Weeks, J.J. Hardy or Corey Hart just to land a proven closer. He may be interested in Cordero if there was another way of getting him, but Brian Fuentes seems like a more realistic possibility for the Brewers.
If I'm Melvin, I make this deal. Weeks has been very inujury prone since he came in the league and possibly before that. Cordero would replace Cordero (just wanted to write that) very easily. Plus if they get Riske to set him up, it should cut down on Cordero's innings.

Brewers agreed to terms with RHP David Riske on a three-year, $13 million contract.
The three-year deal could be worth up to $20 million based on incentives tied to closing games and also includes a $4.75 million option for 2011. Riske is likely to enter the season in a setup role, but could compete with Derrick Turnbow for ninth-inning duties if the Brewers fail to bring in another closer option. A Type B free agent, the Royals will receive a supplemental first-round pick for losing Riske.
    Great signing for the Brewers.

Haha that'd be cool. But Fuentes isn't that good is he?

Congrats to the Brewers on the other pick up.

Fuentes is actually pretty dominating, but he'll have three or four games every year where he just melts down (example: giving up 5 runs and getting just one out).

He'd be great for the BrewCrew!
