Recently the two young up and comers that get mentioned with high praise have been MLB Networks #1 and #2 prospects. They are Jason Heyward and Stephen Strasburg. Its the classic do you get the everyday player or ace starting pitcher. A brief scouting report of the two:
Jason Heyward, OF, Atlanta Braves
Not since Andrew Jones has an outfielder been as hyped as Jason. He does all five tools well and is the current starting RF for the resurgent Atlanta Braves. His power, athleticism, and advanced approach to the plate are his bread and butter. Not only does he have those plus tools: He's a solid fielder with a strong arm and has great speed for his size. What's amazing is he's only a couple weeks younger than my brother (who turns 21 in July, Heyward turns 21 in August). Biggest comparsions are to Dave Parker and Willie McCovey. I think he could be a poor mans Griffey Jr (I don't see him being like the 95-00 kid, but he could put the same type of numbers in a small scale).
Steven Strasburg, SP, Washington Nationals
You would have to be under a rock or believe that Albert Pujols can't hit over .200 to not have heard of Strasburg. He's that kid you see in Little League that you think is too old to play guys his own age. Armed with a fastball that hovers at 99 and tops out at 103 to go with three above average pitches, Steven could be up sooner than later this season. From footage that I saw on him, he's got Kerry Wood stuff with a better delivery and durability. The ball just explodes out his hand and eats hitters alive. He might not have his intelligence but Curt Schilling comes to mind with his power and great control.
In reality, I would build my franchise around Strasburg because you can't find pitching like that all the time. Heyward is dynamic and is a rare type of player but you can find him before a guy like Stephen. Who would you draft if you had the choice? Give your two cents.
