Note how Murph is in the dirt five feet ahead of the base and has his feet on the ground. Utley didn't get his knee down till he was past the base and had his legs up to whip Tejada. Utley has a history of this.

Also note Tejada's back was turned. It's not 0 or 100. I'm okay with "takeout" slides, but you can do so in a way that doesn't exponentially increase the odds of injuring him.

Oh, so it's fine to deliberately try to take out a middle infielder's legs (Murphy was also nowhere near the bag) as long as you're "early" on the slide. Unwritten rules are the best.

Murphy's slide is a little precarious as well but al least he's not full on tackling someone and treating the slide as an afterthought

And if Cal Ripken is ok with Utley's action because "nitty gritty rough and tough" and "tradition!" Then I hope he's ok with Utley getting plunked with a fastball on Monday because that falls under the same thing.

Oh, but he's classy for ducking out of the way to let the infielder complete the double play! That's a guy everybody would want on his team, AMIRITE?

We're clearly not gonna agree here mofo. Utley had every chance to break up that play in a less dangerous way. Instead he targeted the player and treated the base as an afterthought if that. And to add insult to injury he gets awarded the base anyway due to the apparent disregard for the neighborhood play that is ACTUALLY a part of the game, by rule. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll agree it was dirty slide, but I don't see any other "less dangerous" way he could've broken up that play. Isn't that the whole point of targeting the fielder? Any more leeway, Tejada turns two, and we're fucked.

People in my TL are saying they never saw the neighboorhood play called like this, but it happened to the Dodgers twice.

Hell has officially frozen over when mofo is the one that makes the most sense around here.

This was a play a couple months ago that made me furious with my own player.

He's not classy for ducking out of the way, he's smart for doing so. Had he not and the ball hit him it would have been runner's interference and wouldn't have been the same thing as someone sliding into the thrower.

Also, you're arguing the extremes here.

You say Mofo is the one making the most sense then point out that you were furious with your own player for doing what Mofo is saying is ok to do?

That makes a little more sense, then.

I couldn't really tell with the angle of the picture and assumed that the arrow pointing towards the bag was meant to say that he wasn't sliding that way.

    Re: 2015 Post Season

Anyway, my issue wasn't with sliding to break up a throw. My issue is with completely disregarding the entire notion of even sliding and straight up tackling Tejada.

I mean, I get that breaking up the throw is part of the game, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

They put a stop to collisions at home plate yet they're going to allow one at 2nd base?

    Re: 2015 Post Season

Does anyone here think there's a good reason he should've been given second base? I can live with the no interference because it's objective, but Tejada was far closer to touching the base than Utley, and Utley left the field. The explanations from MLB have left much to be desired IMO
