NY Times : Palmeiro took Stanozolol

Breaking news on ESPNEWS...they said it was the same drug Ben Johnson used (Canadian sprinter that won the gold medal in the 100m at the '84 or '88 Summer Olympics). They said the Times will post it tomorrow...woo, I'm breaking a story early that no one cares about.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

I don't know what the hell it is, but apparently it's an actual steroid, not some kind of protein shake or some garbage like that.

    • Stanozolol is a man-made steroid, similar to the a naturally occurring steroid testosterone.
    There you go.

for people to lazy to look it up

    What is stanozolol?
    • Stanozolol is a man-made steroid, similar to the a naturally occurring steroid testosterone.
    • Stanozolol is used in the treatment of hereditary angioedema, which causes episodes of swelling of the face, extremities, genitals, bowel wall, and throat. Stanozolol may decrease the frequency and severity of these attacks.
    • Stanozolol may also be used for purposes other than those listed here.

Well if it was illegal in 1984 then there is no excuse for this to be in his system. What did Canseco say he gave to him?

"...which causes episodes of swelling of the ... genitals..."

Yea... that would indeed explain it.

The generic name for stanozolol is Winstrol. The “detectable period” for Winstrol is about 3 weeks for the oral and two months for the injectable.

One of the most serious side effects of Winstrol is hepatic peliosis. This is the development of bleeding, swelling, and cysts in the liver, a malignant disease with symptoms that include loss of appetite, weakness, bloating, jaundice, and upper abdominal discomfort.

    Guilty as charged...

    Why am I not surprised?

Now that's the kind of stuff I was looking for.

Going under the assumption this is true...well, I seriously have to reconsider my view on Palmeiro.

As for the HoF argument, I really have to determine whether I think steroids is grounds for DQing from the HoF (in my view) and if so, what level of player gets by such a charge. (I mean, if you're a tremendous player, many fans will let you off the hook of even serious offenses. How many people want Rose in the HoF again? Suppose Rose had 3000 hits instead of 4300, how many people then? 2500? 2250?

I wanna hear what Raffy has to say. Raffy played in the steroid era just like everyone else did. And he did a lot better than a lot of players in that era. Therefore he still gets my Hall vote, but not first ballot.

I'd love to hear his story. Funny thing, I think I'd be more inclined to vote for him for the Hall if he admitted it (if he knows that he did it) since that at least shows integrity (much like the respect I felt for Giambi after all but admitting it in an unnecessary press conference) that makes up partially in that department.

Of course, if he keeps denying it, who am I to say he's wrong. The testing is likely correct...but what if it isn't? A freak error?
