I say it should be decided by the player. He is the one who should be fully credited for his career. We aren't recognizing a team's accomplishments here, rather it is the player's accolades that got him there. Let him pick the team whom he finds favor with the most.

Seriously, why does it matter? Yes, we can all laugh at the player's decision if he chooses to do something like that. But perhaps Boggs wanted the history of being the first Devil Ray in the HOF.

I guess a Yankee fan could list Babe Ruth as a HOFer for their team credentials. But wouldn't they claim him even if he went in with the Sox?

But if they keep it as is I agree the player's preference should carry the most weight. (But not be the ultimate decision, so as to prevent things like a player going in as part of a team he played one year in his twilight with.)

I can see MLB’s position.

Just to get it straight once and for all there was no stipulation in Boggs’ Devil Ray contract to go in as Ray if he made it and he never considered it himself. This was just another one of those stupid rumors and jokes that besieged the team for years when they were the laughing stock of the league.
It has been perpetuated by clueless bloggers (just like a lot of crap these days) to the point where many actually believe it as fact.
