NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.

"I wish I had never touched steroids," McGwire said in a statement. "It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

Even though his declining to talk about the past was one of the most pathetic things I've ever heard, the congressmen had no business of pressuring him to admit he used steroids with "How do you know [steroids] are bad?". That was a dick move. The only difference between cheating ballplayers and sleazebag politicians is that the latter are smart enough to use vague words like "transgressions" to play down illegal or immoral activities and they use family vacations as an excuse to run away from the media.

Besides, this isn't really news to me, not because of the cloud of suspicion, but because he already admitted during the HR chase to using the andro stuff, which was then legal in the U.S. and wasn't classified as a steroid. I thought he could have saved himself a lot of trouble by going back to that story without having to divulge whether he used illegal steroids.

No way he would get my vote now. Honestly, I might have before (probably not) but no way now. His whole career was a lie. His whole career was a cheat. No way he deserves to be in the Hall.

His whole career? The guy hit 49 homers a rookie...a clean rookie. He admitted to taking them, but also said he had good / bad seasons before and while on them. I think that if he ever gets in it will be toward the end of his eligibility.

There are a lot of people that were looking forward to this. I was one of them. I knew it was coming sooner or latter from Mark. I always pegged him as the type to spill the beans, just waiting for the proper moment.

That being said, I still wouldn't hold him out of the hall but time will tell. If he doesn't get in no sweet of my back, but there will be some sort of recognition for what he did.

If they have been proven/admitted to have used steroids, no one. If they haven't, it's the voters' discretion on whether they think the career was genuine
