    He was 49. He would have been 50 in August, and he always said he wanted to play until 50. I loved the guy, he was a great person (I've spoken to him during BP), but it was time. He had lost his ability to turn on a fastball about 4 or 5 years ago, and he lost his ability to go the other way about 2 years ago. I wish him the best of luck in life after baseball.

    He said he wanted to play until he was 50, he should have held on till August this year and he would have.

    I remember, I once found a baseball card of his, from 1991. The back of the card called him a "grizzled veteran".
