What was the worst trade ever made?

In late June 2002, Expos GM Omar Minaya traded Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips for three months of Bartolo Colon.

Sizemore and Phillips are two of the best 5-tool players in baseball and Lee is off to a 4-0 start with a 0.28 ERA and 29-to-2 strikeout to walk rate.

    What is worse than this?

In the Giants' case...Joe Nathan, Boof Bonser, Francisco Liriano for A.J. Pierzynski.

Nathan needs no explanation. Bonser will get better and so will Liriano as long as he doesn't have many side effects from his surgery. Correct me if I'm wrong, but S.F. only had Pierzynski for one year, and he didn't do much for them.

Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.

Phillips never really produced for Cleveland, so the Giants one has to be worse.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

Off the top of my head, here's my top 5:

    1) Boston Red Sox trade Jeff "Squatty" Bagwell to Houston for pitcher Larry Andersen

    - Yeah, Squatty wasn't any good.

    2) Seattle Mariners trade Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek to Boston for Heathcliff Slocumb

    - Well, Lowe was decent and Varitek is the captain of the Sawx.

    3) Tigers trade John Smoltz to Atlanta for Doyle Alexander

    - Yeah, let's trade a potential first ballot HOFer for a scrub no one has heard of

    4) Dodgers trade Pedro Martinez to Montreal for Delino DeShields

    - See above comment

    5) Houston trades Jack Billingham, Ed Armbrister, Cesar Geronimo, Dennis Menke, and Joe Morgan to the Reds for Lee May, Tommy Helms, and Jimmy Stewart

    - Ok, the Reds get major pieces of the one of the best teams in MLB history for
2 serviceable players and the star of many good movies. Go figure.

The Reds were never on the bad side of any of these...

They got Frank Robinson, Tom Seaver, Joe Morgan...nice.

Probably not some of the "worst ever" but a couple of my favorites.

Phil Plantier, Derek Bell, Doug Brocail, Ricky Gutierrez, Pedro Martinez (the infielder), and Craig Shipley to Houston

Roberto Pategnie, Craig Shipley, Brian Williams, Andujar Cedeno, Sean Fesh, Steve Finley, and Ken Caminiti to San Diego

Akinori Otsuka, Adam Eaton, and George Killian to Texas for Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young, and Termell Sledge

The only thing that $100,000 was was a curse.
