Nathan needs no explanation. Bonser will get better and so will Liriano as long as he doesn't have many side effects from his surgery. Correct me if I'm wrong, but S.F. only had Pierzynski for one year, and he didn't do much for them.
Pierzynski was did OK with the bat as he was second among catchers in RBI but yes this was an awful trade.

A few more trades that were awful:
Lou Brock, Jack Spring and Paul Toth to the St. Louis Cardinals for Ernie Broglio, Bobby Shantz, and Doug Clemens.

Jim Edmonds for Kent Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy

Matt Morris and his entire salary for Rajai Davis

Jason Schmidt and John Vander Wal for Armando Rios and Ryan Vogelsong

at the time of the trade, it made sense. there was NO inkling that Smoltz was going to turn into the pitcher he did. Alexander was acquired to help the Tigers get the pennant. which he did.

Still doesn't change what Smoltz turned into and what Doyle didn't.

Most trades make sense at the time of the trade.

You won't find many GMs that will make a trade that doesn't make sense at the time it's made.

Re: What was the worst trade ever made?

    A couple more to ponder:

    1) Nolan Ryan and 3 scrubs for Jim Fregosi
-Hall of Famer, 7 No Hitters, traded for a mediocre player(and the Mets have not had a no-no since

    2) Scott Kazmir and Jose Diaz for Bartolome Fortunato and Victor Zambrano
-Unfortunately, Zambrano could NOT be fixed in 10 minutes, not 10 starts, not even 10 years could fix this guy

3)TOM SEAVER for Dan Norman, Steve Henderson, Pat Zachary, Doug Flynn
-A HOF-er with the highest vote percentage EVER for 4 guys who I'm pretty sure no one ever heard of. What the hell?

4)Jason Bay for Steve Reed and Jason Middlebrook
-A guy who turned out to be a slugger for two shitty middle relievers.

Blue Jays send David Cone to Yankees for pitchers Marty Janzsen, Jason Jarvis and Mike Gordon
-Key part of the Yankee dynasty, no-no throwing David Cone. Can anyone tell me what the guys the Jays got in return ever did?

Cardinals send Keith Hernandez to Mets for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey
-Umm, the Mets got a Leader and a World Series. The Cardinals got...I'm not sure

Indians send Jeromy Burnitz to Brewers for Kevin Seitzer
-A perennial 30 HR hitter for....74 career HR

Gary Carter for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham, and Floyd Youmans
-another World Series leader for 216 HR, averages between .260 and .220, and a pitcher with a record of 30-34

He was posting the trade that sent Jason Bay from the Mets to the Padres.

The next Bay trade was Jason Bay and Oliver Perez to Pittsburgh for Brian Giles.
