    Is John Smoltz a HOFer?

Smoltz got his 3,000th strikeout tonight so the question is has John Smoltz done enough to get himself into Cooperstown? Here are some thing to look at.

-Only pitcher with 200 wins and 150 saves
-A career 3.25 ERA as of right now
    -1996 Cy Young Award winner
    -A career post-season ERA of 2.65
-Led the league in wins and strikeouts twice
    -Of course the 3,000 K's
    -All-time leader in post-season wins

    I had to vote yes!

Yes. If he didnt become a closer there for a few years, he would be a 300 game winner. No doubt in my mind, he is a first ballot HOF!! Plus he is very clutch in the post season!!!

Yes sir! Few ever have the success he did as both a closer and a starter. He is definitely a HoF'er

well, he probably isnt pitching now if he wasnt a closer for a few years.

that said, he's clearly in the HOF. postseason magic (hard luck loser in one of the best pitched WS games ever), 3000 K's, 200 wins, good ERA.

has done everything you can ask for and more as a pitcher

Clearly not the reason Atlanta only managed one world series ring in the 90's, with his postseason cred. He's not done putting up good numbers either. He won't need 300 victories to get in the Hall, at least he shouldn't.

Other things in his favor that do tend to matter for some players:
-Good rep with media and people of that nature (anti-Jim Rice)
-No controversies throughout his career (anti-Roger Clemens)
-Does have a world series ring

Only guys with 3,000+ K's who won't get in are Blyleven and Clemens.

Re: Is John Smoltz a HOFer?

He has done it all on the mound. Started as a quality starter and then moved onto a quality closer and then back to starter. He was great at it all. Yeshe is a first ballot HOF.

He's got everything going for him. Great ballplayer, great team leader, just an all-around great guy. No doubt in my mind he's a HOFer.

True, he has been a leader of the Braves through thick and thin. Great guy and he deserves all the accomplishments.
