Eric Chavez, over rated? Maybe the As fans will laugh with me on this. He is one of the best defensive 3B guys out there, who puts up great offensive numbers and he barely gets any recognition. Believe it or not......some people I've spoken to personally has no knowledge of Chavez. If anything Chavez is under rated.

how is beltran underrated, he's got one of the biggest contracts in baseball, and he's hitting .295, which, compared to last season, is overrated.

Basically, anyone who plays in NY and is not a rookie (Wright, Cano, Wang, Valent, Yates) is overrated.

    Underrated:

    Matt Stairs:
    OK, here's a real situation:
    Player A: 300-340-515, first baseman
    Player B: 272-409-520, OF/1B

Now tell me, which one is the multi-million dollar superstar of his team and which one is the guy who can only get one year contracts in spite of not having an OPS under .747 for almost a decade (who just hit his 200th career HR to boot).

    Doug Davis
Same situation as Ben Sheets. Mid 3 ERA, barely enough run support to break even. But as Sheets has gotten famous for his domination, Davis is one of the quietest good pitchers in baseball. What does a 3.4 ERA and 12 wins in 2004 get you? In my four fantasy leagues, 15th round (12 teams), 15th round (12 teams), 15th round (14 teams, right before my pick), 14th round (12 teams, right before my pick). Yeah.

    Just a couple rants.

I agree. Of all the major league third basemen, Chavez is easily one of the best when so many of them are just average. Yeah he's had a real slow start this season but I fully expect him to get close to the numbers were accustomed to seeing from him.

    I disagree about Piazza too.

    Overrated-Kerry Wood
This guy has been talked up on potential and the guy has never come through. He has never won 15 games in a a season and can't even stay healthy. The Cubs should have traded him years ago.

    Underrated-Todd Helton
The man gets no love just because of where he plays his home games. Todd is a great hitter on the road as well. His numbers would be no different if he were playing in Fenway and then he would be all we would hear about. He is also a great defensive first baseman. From 2002-2005 Helton hit .310 on the road.

I'd say Eric isn't overrated and Carlos isn't underrated but I like the other two.

Agree with Kerry being overrated. Maybe he is the Michael Vick of MLB . I still want to keep him though/

Agree with Todd too. This year though he isn't showing it.

A few from the Cubs and Rockies
underrated-Derek Lee, Michael Barett, Nefi Perez, Glendon Rusch, Carlos Zambrano, Clint Barmes, Matt Holliday, Brad Hawpe

overrated-Borowski-one good year, injuries hurt him lately. Patterson is somewhat as he hasn't met the hype yet. Lots of the Rockies pitchers get hyped and then fail.

You and everyone else wouldn't have said Doug Davis was underrated when he was pitching for the Texas Rangers. The statheads emerge with the label of underrated for Davis only after he puts up good numbers for Milwaukee.

Who would call a player with a 5 ERA underrated? Of course a requirement of the "underrated" label is putting up good numbers. That's like saying a requirement of getting on base is running to first.

That's why I don't do overrated/underrated lists. If stats are everything, then the players are the stats they put up. The only thing observers can argue about whether a player is overrated or underrated is the amount of national recognition with sugar on top the player receives.
