I think it's dumb for the Yankees to fire Torre and he's simply being used as the scapegoat here.

`Deeply disappointed' Steinbrenner labels Yankees `sad failure'

    October 8, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said he was "deeply disappointed" at his team's elimination in the first round of the AL playoffs, calling it a "sad failure."

New York was heavily favored in its series against the Detroit Tigers and won Tuesday's opener 8-4. The Tigers then won 4-3 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, and swept two games in Detroit, 6-0 Friday and 8-3 Saturday.

"I am deeply disappointed at our being eliminated so early in the playoffs," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued Sunday by spokesman Howard Rubenstein. "This result is absolutely not acceptable to me nor to our great and loyal Yankee fans. I want to congratulate the Detroit Tigers organization and wish them well. Rest assured, we will go back to work immediately and try to right this sad failure and provide a championship for the Yankees, as is our goal every year."

Rubenstein said he spoke with Steinbrenner on Sunday.

"Clearly he was upset," he said.

Rubenstein said Steinbrenner was not going to comment on a report in the New York Daily News that manager Joe Torre likely will be fired and replaced by Lou Piniella.

Dude, he's not a ****ing scapegoat. He sat back as our team did nothing. When we got a runner on base, he didn't hit and run, try to steal, or bunt the runner over. He is not the manager we need, as he is too laid back. We couldn't just sit back and wait for the long ball, not with so little hitting, and that's exactly what he did. He doesn't hit and run ever, and we had two of the best contact hitters in baseball. He doesn't start the runners nearly ever. He might not need to go, but if he stays, he better change his style.

No hitting? The Yankees have the most stacked line up in baseball. Is it Torre's fault they decided to go to sleep in the playoffs?

The Yankees don't have base stealers, perhaps Torre was aware of this and didn't want to get his guys out on the basepaths?

Brian Cashman should go before Torre does. Anytime a team is relying on Jaret Wright to save their season you know they have pitching problems.

No base stealers? Cano, Jeter, Abreu, ARod, Melky, Damon. They can all steal and have the speed to. And, like I said, he should start the runners more often. He makes terrible bullpen decisions, trusts starters for too long...

And, if he was proactive, he would have realized that they weren't hitting and bunted a runner over. Or ordered Giambi to bunt when the shift is on and a runner's on first. These are things he should have done and didn't.

Not to mention, what you say must mean it's never the manager's fault. Hell, why are any managers ever fired? Maybe there players are always not good enough, or always didn't play to their potential.

But 1/4 of the league fires their manager every year...

I retract my "no base stealers" retort.

I laughed when I read "ordered Giambi to bunt"

I just find it funny how the manager is always the first guy pointed at when a team doesn't win. Torre went with a gameplan that got the Yankees the best record in baseball and it's his fault when the players suddenly don't produce using the same gameplan?

You question Torre for not being "proactive" I question how he was supposed to realize the best offense in baseball was going to suddenly not produce.

He wasn't. But after the first 7 innings that we didn't score, I would think he might mix it up a little.

Hitting can't carry your team all year as the pitching wasn't that good. Poor bullpen decisions as a result of a poor bullpen besides Rivera. No one else was that reliable. The Yankees making it to 11 straight postseasons should have Torre's job safe as he is under contract for net season. Cashman's shitty job as a GM should have him out.

Shitty job? He acquired Abreu. Trust me, he's not going anywhere. Torre is.

Ohh wow he acquired Abreu! And that was because the Yankees were the only team that would take on the full amount remaining on his contract and got away with giving as little as they did to acquire him. It wasn't like he out negiotiated other GM's around the league because most other teams weren't dumb enough, even the ones with a large market, to pay a player that at the time was only batting .277 with 8 HR and 65 RBI's. At the time he was acquired, he wasn't worth the amount his contract was to pay him. Cashman lucked out on his huge financial risk, but I wouldn't mind listing all his screw ups as well.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

Actually, the Red Sox had him acquired, but Epstien wanted $2 mil of his salary paid by the Phils. Thus, we get an All-Star hitter the second half, and your team falls into depression.

    It was a great deal.

So he added another hitter to compliment the best offense in baseball, all the while leaving the pitching in relative shambles...

Whenever you have Jaret freaking Wright in your playoff rotation you're in trouble.

When the guy you "should've" started is Cory freakin Lidle, you're definitely in trouble.

    Cashman should go before Torre.

Would getting Abreu have made a difference in the fate of this year's Red Sox? I highly doubt it. Injuries to so many key players and a lack of pitching killed the Red Sox!!!!! Last time I checked, Abreu wasn't a pitcher, had we gotten him, even if the Sox had made the playoffs over the Yankees, we would have suffered the same fate as the Yankees... An early exit because we didn't have enough pitching. Thanks, but no thanks. The Yankees acquired him, and now they can pay his overpriced salary, in a lineup that didn't and doesn't need another big bat. Hopefully the Sox will use that money on pitching, not another outfielder. I'm glad you are pleased with the acquistion of Abreu and your teams first round exit of the playoffs. I'm no more displeased with our 3rd place finish than I would have been had the Red Sox suffered the same fate!!!!!!
