Round One (Players): Derek Jeter versus Whitey Ford

Derek Jeter (1996-2006): 2nd in postseason runs and 1st in postseason hits. He is also 2nd in total bases, doubles, and extra base hits and first in singles. Jeter is in the Top 10 for postseason homeruns, stolen bases, walks, and RBIs. His defining playoff moment may be in game three of the 2001 ALDS, where he gave a spectacular defensive effort, crossing the diamond to make a deflecting flip to get Jeremy Giambi at home, leading to a three game comeback. He also had a walk-off homerun in Game 4 of the 2001 WS against Byung-Hyun Kim. Derek Jeter owns four World Series rings and won the 2000 WS MVP award.

    versus

Whitey Ford (1950, 1953, 1955-1958, 1960-1964) - Whitey Ford pitched in eleven World Series for, who else, the New York Yankees. In 22 starts, he compiled a 10-8 record with a 2.71 ERA. He owns six World Series rings. He has 7 complete games and 4 shutouts. His 10 wins are a World Series record by three over three other men. He has the most World Series games pitched with 22, two more than Mariano Rivera. By far the most innings in World Series history and the most K's as well. He holds middling spots on postseason spots due to the introduction of annual LCS and LDS matchups.

You know what, Jeter may be a favorite to win it all. So I'm choosing Whitey as Jeter gets too much attention already!

I originally named my cat Whitey Ford.

Jeter will probably lose by the same logic.

I originally named my cat after Chili Davis.

Then he got a last name when a kid named Mikihl Bumb (or something like that) was on Jeopardy, so he's now Chilibumb.

Tom Brady wouldn't have a six-year championship drought as Jeter has now.

Ford's ERA is very impressive by today's standards, but his record is mediocre.

Jeter gets my vote simply because he holds so many records and as General said, Ford's record was abysmal compared to many other great playoff performers listed.

And I named my dog after the greatest player of all time. Griffey.

Ford gets my vote. Jeter needs to match Ford's six rings.

Whitey came to play in the post-season and always seemed to be the winning pitcher in the games he started.
Jeter has been very good and was the best the Yankees had this season, but it's an easy pick for me -- Whitey.
