A judge issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for Tigers designated hitter Dmitri Young after learning that Young, who is out on bond in a misdemeanor domestic-violence case, is no longer in Michigan, as the bond requires him to be.
"We received documentation this afternoon," 48th District Court administrator Jim Harkins said, "that shows that (Young) did not comport with the bond conditions set by the court. Those conditions stated specific dates for his job, when he could leave the state."
Earlier in the day, Young and his attorney, William Swor, failed to appear in the Bloomfield Hills courtroom of Judge Diane Dickow D'Agostini for a pre-trial hearing. Young is charged with choking a 21-year-old Toledo woman at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham on April 14. He faces a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
On Monday, Swor faxed the court a request to delay Tuesday's hearing because he was scheduled to be in a trial in Florida. But assistant Oakland County prosecutor Tare Wigod told The Associated Press that Swor told him Young was out of state because of a medical emergency.
D'Agostini rejected the delay request and, when neither Young nor his attorney showed, ordered Swor to provide proof by the end of the day that Young was housed at a legitimate medical facility.
The document provided by Swor, however, which the court refused to release to the public, indicated Young was not in Michigan, a violation of his bond terms.
The judge forfeited Young's original $5,000 personal bond, instituted a cash/surety bond of $5,000 in its place, and issued a bench warrant for Young's arrest.
Swor did not respond to telephone and e-mail requests for an interview.
