Rancho Cucamonga Quakes shortstop Brandon Wood today was named the 2005 California League Most Valuable Player. Wood, who is the first Quakes player ever to be honored as the League's MVP, is batting .322 (163/506) with 102 runs, 48 doubles, four triples, 41 home runs and 112 RBI in 123 games.

Wood leads all minor league players in home runs and doubles this season. He is one homer shy of the Angel organization's minor league single season record (42, Dick Simpson, San Jose, 1962) and is the first California League hitter to hit at least 40 home runs since Dave Duncan in 1966 (46, Modesto). Wood also leads the California League in runs, hits, RBI, slugging percentage (.676) and extra-base hits (93) while ranking sixth in batting average.
Wow, this guy destroyed California League pitching. I wonder why they never promoted him to AA...
