Thread: Royals want Furcal?

    Royals want Furcal?

The Royals will make a run free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.
GM Allard Baird has the money to sign one or two prime free agents, but there's little chance he'll land one. None of the top players are going to pick Kansas City if the money is comparable elsewhere. In the highly unlikely event that Furcal actually does end up with the Royals, the team would shop Angel Berroa and move him to second if there are no takers.

Interesting. Glad to see a team like the Royals going after some bigger names.

But they should go after a big name that's actually good.

Furcal isn't? I'd consider him good, and he's a definite upgrade over Berroa.

Highly inconsistent and overrated. He'd be bad for KC to waste money on.

Overrated? Never really heard people talk about him like he's the greatest SS. He's decent. Inconsistent, ya maybe. But I think it'd be a great investment for the KC Royals.

I don't see in what sense Furcal is inconsistent, but the Royals have so many problems, it would be a huge waste of resources to sign him when the team will lose 90 games anyway.

Why would he want to go there anyway?

His OBP jumps around like Oprah's weight, he's notorious for starting off the season horribly, one week he's almost at .300 batting average, the next he's looking at .260. His errors come in bunches, he could easily blow the league away in stolen bases but is often hesitant to do so (46/56 ain't bad but he was working on four consecutive seasons under 30 steals). He's also generally poor on the road. Doesn't seem like a guy to try and jump start things in KC if you ask me. I'll be happy that's no longer a brave, though.

Royals would be better off going with a marketable name like Nomar.

He might if the money was right. He would be the star again but the Royals would have to get more and show Nomar that they want to win.

Here's the thing about KC. They've always been cheap. They probably just throw out there that they're interested in Furcal, just to get fans interested. It'd be great if they did, but I doubt that they will.
