    MLB Draft Pick Signing Deadline

Draft Pick Signing Deadline Is Tonight: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

I hope the new collective bargaining will do something about the slotting system. No one in this draft should make Harper or Strasburg money. Something needs to be done about paying these draft picks so much money with so much uncertainty that comes along with it. It's like the NFL where rookies got paid more than the Pro Bowlers

What's wrong with them making more money? Bryce Harper in total got what a middling starter makes in a year.

Because for every Bryce Harper there's 10 players who hope to only become a middling starter.

Hell, Bryce Harper could be that for all we know. He wouldn't be the first "OMG NEXT SUPER STAR!!!" to fizzle out and not do shit in the majors.

So? Risk is rolled into the price, like any investment. Why should these kids take less money so you feel better?

to be fair I'm more speaking on the general concept. I don't think MLB is out of control like the NFL was. It's not about me feeling better. It's about me wanting my team to be able to afford to keep their proven talent, which is hindered if an out of control unregulated rookie market forces them to overpay for unproven "talent".I don't think MLB is out of control right now but with more and more attention and hype being given to the draft and no slotting rules it could get there.

Well, what is overpaying? The Latin market is largely unregulated, and you see what prospects get out there. The problem with the NFL system was that they were hard slotted but not capped. The top pick essentially decided what everyone else would make, and the lack of guaranteed contracts encourages holdouts.

But here's the real problem. Cap the baseball draft with slotting, and those kids will play other sports.

That's true. I guess I just have a philosophical problem with unproven talent being paid like proven talent regardless of which sport you're talking about.

Is there any other industry where you can enter the profession with no track record whatsoever and get paid like someone at the top of the chain of command?

There is no profession like that, let alone any other.

The Rays have 4 that remain unsigned……I like Friedman’s attitude about things going down to the deadline and the guys that do and guys that don’t sign.

Sure, tell your fans that the guys who you do sign are the ones who really want it and the guys who you fail to sign are the ones who don't really want it. That's called damage control.

What I get from that is "you either want to play pro ball now or you are under the delusion you are worth more money...... so thanks but no thanks and we can hopefully pick a few guys next year that are grateful they got picked at all".

Yeah, they say that, but we'll see at the deadline. Talk is talk, whether from Boras or Friedman.
