Insane blockbuster deal almost a reality

Via Twitter, Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Padres almost dealt Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers for James Loney, Russell Martin, Blake DeWitt, James McDonald and Ivan Dejesus.

Holy bejesus. That trade would have been the biggest of the deadline if it went through, no question. Seems like a pretty fair trade to me to be honest. Would have given both teams what they're looking for. The Dodgers the pieces they need to be the unequivocal WS favorites, and the Padres some young, proven guys to keep for the long run.

What do you know, Loney and Dejesus end up getting traded for Adrian Gonzalez after all. It's too bad that this time we had to give up real prospects in addition, and McDonald had already been wasted on Dotel.
