My bad....here's the update on the metsblog post that threw me off:

Joe Demayo of NY Baseball Digest said earlier the Mets will acquire 1B Adam LaRoche from the Red Sox. Demayo later explained, he was told the Mets and Red Sox had ‘a good grasp on a deal,’ but then the Marlins and Braves called, adding, “I may have jumped the gun a little.”

They got Casey Kotchman one-for-one from what I'm hearing. Great job again by Epstein.

I could not disagree more Kyle. This was the DUMBEST trade ever. They traded LaRoche SOLELY because they had too many 1B options. So they trade away their league average, lefty hitting 1B....for another league average, lefty hitting 1B? It's useless. At the least the Sox could have gotten a player that plays a position they aren't stacked at.

I agree it wasn't smart to get another 1B, but here are the stat comparisons this season:

    LaRoche: .248, .326, 13 HR, 43 RBI
    Kotchman: .282, .354, 6 HR, 41 RBI

Very similar, but I'd take Kotchman.

LaRoche career stats(1st half vs 2nd half)

    1st half: .252 BA/.326 OBP/.447 SLG
    2nd half: .295 BA/.356 OBP/.544 SLG

LaRoche is a proven 2nd half hitter....I'd say that taking that into account swings it in LaRoche's direction.....

Definitely an improvement for the Braves. I'm not sold that it's a huge upgrade, as LaRoche has been struggling more than usual this year. But he was getting hot with the Red Sox and I have high hopes that he'll bring the Braves some much needed power. Don't really lose much at all on defense. And I liked him, good to get him back.

Well Machiavelli, this wasn't exactly what I wanted but as you know my dislike for Kotchman, so I'll give it a semi-yay.

Re: LaRoche on the move again

It's ironic that LaRoche was pissed about Nate McLouth being traded to Atlanta, only for LaRoche to be reunited with McLouth after LaRoche was sitting pretty with the Red Sox.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I got to work this morning. I find out that LaRoche is back with Atlanta. I'm a little happy. I also like LaRoche. They might be hoping he will be like his former self but doubt it.

Gotta like the deal from both teams standpoints.

I can understand Boston fans confusion but, LaRoche's power needs regular at bats, whereas Kotchman should be solid on base guy off the bench in Boston.

I like Florida's upgrade a little bit better(Johnson over Bonafacio), but this wasn't a bad deal at all, especially with the Mets in on the talks before the trade went down.

Dislike the deal. Laroche is still a human windmill and has not been able to develop the patience at the plate. At least Kotchman could draw walks.
