The money of course silly! Seven years now?? I don't see Sabathia holding up for that long. I don't see him getting past five years with that body of his.

You know what? I'll take 5 years out of 7 if that's what it took to get him to come to New York. I'll chalk up those last 2 as candy to a baby. He might not last the full 7, but that's what it took to get him here, so that's what they did. I think it's cool. If he goes 4, it might be a bust. But I'll take 5

Here's a very interesting fact about the deal:

The deal has an opt-out clause after the first three years, which are worth $69MM. The 31 year-old Sabathia will make his opt-out decision after the 2011 season with four years, $92MM remaining on the deal. He would have to buck the opt-out trend (or renegotiate) to make this more than a three-year, $69MM deal for the Yankees.
Not entirely sure I understand this all, but my basic understanding is that he can scoot after 3 years if he doesn't like New York. The part I don't get is what is this buck the opt-out trend business? That makes no sense to me.

Also, the Yankees made it $161 million total, just so it would top Johan Santana's yearly average. 160 came out just barely below that.

I love when guys do this. It's like A-Rod getting $252MM instead of $250MM just so he can get double Kevin Garnett's $126MM.

This doesn't surprise me, I'm still not 100% sure that Sabathia is 100% sold on New York. If he doesn't like it, he stays 3 years and pockets $23 mil a year...good deal for him.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

And for the Yankees as well, I would think. 3 years of CC is better than none

Re: BREAKING NEWS: CC picks New York

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that CC Sabathia is expected to receive an opt-out clause after three years as part of his deal with the Yankees.
Sabathia would have required it in a contract with any team. The clause will allow him to become a free agent again at the age of 31.
This is why he didn't wait for a West Coast team to make an offer. Like NYGF said, three years is better than none. I would like it better if the Yankees could opt out as well.

Plus, I wouldn't mind if he opted out, because that would save the Yankees from having to deal with him breaking down before the contract ran out. Not saying I only want him for 3 years, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

If he starts wearing down in that 3rd year do you really believe he'll opt out?

No, he won't. But I don't see that happening. He wouldn't be this highly touted if teams didn't think he could go 3 years

Um, he will be 31 after the 3rd year...I know he's a fat mess, but I doubt he'll be wearing down..

Re: BREAKING NEWS: CC picks New York

If what teams think about highly touted players was always the truth there wouldn't exist contracts like Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre, Chan Ho Park, etc etc

I'm not saying CC will break down that early, but with his girth it's certainly a possibility.

But my main point was that if his value starts to drop within those three years I highly doubt he opts out when he could, instead, keep making more than Johan Santana.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: CC picks New York

I agree, it's still a risk giving him 7 years. But guys like Andruw Jones are really rare. That case still surprises the shit outta me when I think aobut it. But yes, it's a possibility
