    Cubs Cubs Acquire Gregg

The Chicago Cubs have acquired Florida Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The Marlins received 22-year-old right-hander Jose Ceda in return, according to sources.

Gregg, who was Florida's closer for most of the 2008 season, saved 29 games last season and was 7-8 with a 3.41 ERA.

He is the fourth arbitration-eligible player traded by the Marlins this offseason, joining first baseman Mike Jacobs, who was traded to Kansas City, and outfielder Josh Willingham and starting pitcher Scott Olsen, who were traded to Washington.
Gregg could be a could setup man for Marmol or vice versa. Gregg comes at a much cheaper price tag than Wood will get being a free agent. Seems like a good deal for the Cubs.

And yet they will still finish third in their division. Ceda is nothing to laugh at.

Ceda is good, Gregg isn't all that good.

The Marlins always do this....it's just that normally they win a World Series first. I think Loria's confused......you own a DIFFERENT NL East team.

Gregg is better than Howry who he is essentially going to be replacing. Gregg will be behind Samardzija is likely to be the main setup guy. Neither Ceda or Gregg are good, Gregg is just more expensive.

Gregg is mediocre. He's NOT a closer, but if he's placed in a 7th or 8th inning role, he could be a solid addition. It's not an awful deal, but Gregg will have to show that he can avoid the HR ball, which was one of his weaknesses last year.

Marlin still have a young, promising rotation with Nolasco, Volstad, Johnson and Miller plus they still have Ramirez and Uggla in the middle of the order. The Marlins got Leo Nunez in the Jacobs trade which made Gregg more expendable. Getting Ceda in return could help that too. Maybin is on his way up too. Marlins will still be tough in '09.

Rumors say Uggla is the next to be traded.....and this is all probably happening because they have no money for arby after locking up Hanley....

After shedding Gregg's salary, they should be able to pay Uggla. Gregg was due to make $4 million.

They can pay Uggla for this year, but he's gonna get a lot of money, that's what happens when you're arguably the best hitting NL 2B. The guy hit 30 HR at a non-power position. Uggla won't be around for too long, if you ask me.

MLB should just contract the Marlins and move the Pirates to the East. Florida is a financial embarrassment.

The Marlins will actually have a higher payroll in '09 than in '08.

Agreed but yet they still exceed our expectations on the ballfield.
