Free Agent Burrell Turned Down $22 Million

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that free agent Pat Burrell turned down a two-year, $22 million offer to remain with the Phillies.
As well he should have. Burrell is a liability defensively and struggled down the stretch, but batted .250/.367/.507 with 33 homers overall and is still relatively young at 31 years old. He seems like a better fit for an AL team looking to add a middle-of-the-order bat and should get plenty offers above $22 million.
I think this is a fair deal for Burrell and that he should have taken it. Phillies have a chance to be a power in the NL for a few years and Burrell would be crazy not to want to be apart of that. Sure he could get more than $11 mil/yr somewhere else but why mess with a good thing? Weird thing is, Burrell hit a lot better away from Philly than at home. Burrell hit .270 with 21 HRs and 46 RBI on the road compared to .230, 12 HRs and 40 RBI at home. Maybe the Mets should sign him so they no longer have to endure his constant assbeatings he hands them.

Oh yeah, we won't make Pat the Bat a scapegoat if he fails to measure up to Manny's production.

It's always about the money, not usually where you are playing, except in a few rare cases. This doesn't surprise me

That's interesting because I had heard that the Phils had only offered him a 1 year deal. Obviously someone is wrong, and it could be me, but in the end, this was the deal he probably should have taken.

This came out right after the WS. Burrell wanted to test free agency and he got burned.

Gotcha. I didn't realize that this offer was made. Either way, the contract he got is what's going to help set a market...not this one.
