    Yankees Yankees Interested In Cameron

The New York Post reports that the Yankees plan to pursue Mike Cameron if the Brewers decline his $10 million option for 2009.
"I am not going to tell you that's right or not," general manager Brian Cashman said. "We are going to do whatever to make the team better, that's the bottom line." Cameron has long been among the game's most underrated players and would be worth a one-year, $10 million commitment from Milwaukee after hitting .243/.331/.477 with 25 homers and strong defense in center field this season.
I think the Yankees have to start getting younger but do like Cameron over Cabrera for a year. Cabrera can go back to being a 4th OFer where he belongs. I have no doubt the Brewers will decline his option. The Yankees should look at this because who wouldn't like to have 25 homers coming from the 7th or 8th slot in the lineup who plays good defense. I still need think the Yankees need to get younger and faster but Cameron could be a good one year fix until some younger guys emerge. Willie Taveras would be appealing if I were Cashman.

Cameron certainly has the resume to be a Yankee. He is old, slowing down, and would demand a lot of money for his services.

Think about it though. This whole problem could be avoided if the Yanks had some decent talent coming up through their farm systems. Yankees fans help me out here: you havn't had decent players come up through your system since Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter. And Melky Cabrera is hardly decent.

God forbid they'd ever have a "rebuilding" year.

Ok, so they do. Is Phil Hughes ready to play in the bigs? And if he is, are they committed enough to having him play a full season in the bigs even if it means throwing a season away to rebuild? Is Joba Chamberlain sober enough?

The point I'm trying to make is that the Yankees don't have to be the Washington Redskins of the MLB. Trading all your draft picks so you can sign free agents sounds pretty good in the short term, but if you take a few years, invest in young talent, and wait it out, you'll have a good team. (i.e. the skins are not doing so bad since they paid eleventy million dollars for Antwaan randel el to be their 3rd or 4th receiver)

I know but people keep saying this like the Yankees don't do it, when nobody realizes that the game plan recently has been to invest in young talent. There's a reason they have a Top 5 minor league system and they're not wildly overpaying anymore

They just overpaid for Arod and Posada.

    Re: Yankees Interested In Cameron

Melky Cabrera will be as good of a CF as Mike Cameron next year

He hit .333 after going down to AAA, and his arm and defense are still amazing.

Just for the record, 21 year old Austin Jackson should be in AAA next year and while he hasn't exactly hit his talent, he could break out and hit the Majors if Melky doesn't produce.

That being said, worst comes to worst and we don't get back Abreu or a replacement, you'd probably see a lineup like Damon in LF, Gardner in CF, and Melky in RF with Jackson getting his shot early. Matsui would be the 4th OF/DH

That's a damned good defensive team, Melky has a cannon, Gardner has an average arm, and we all know Damon throws like an amputee.

I doubt that's our OF, but even if it is, a lineup like:
    1. Damon LF
    2. Jeter SS
    3. ARod 3B
    4. Nameless 1st Baseman
    5. Matsui DH
    6. Posada C
    7. Cano 2B
    8. Melky RF
    9. Gardner CF

would help out pitchers a whole lot. We'll see what happens.

if Matsui is healthy, isn't he a better defender than Damon?

    NO

Damon is a great fielder, but his arm is bad

Matsui is a mediocre fielder with a mediocre arm

Plus in that valley you need LF speed

That would be a very average OF both defensively and offensively, mostly offensively.
