Zito gave us some great years and I'm glad he got paid. He's no Schmidt(sp?) tho. This market is insane.

He's gonna look weird in a Giants uni.

And it's this exact thought process that has brought baseball salaries way out of control.

Some whacko GM gives his mediocre guy an insane contract, what happens next? The next guy's agent points to that contract while pointing out that his guy is better than that guy, and therefore should get paid more.

Next thing you know..... Gil Meche is being paid 11 mil per year.

Well, he almost got that. But it was from KC, they'd pay even McKain 6 million a year if he could run to 1B in less than 60 seconds or throw the ball over the plate.

So with Zito to be 29 early next season and if the option for the 8th year is picked up, I guess then he'll fit into the Giants player type mold. I kid, I kid.

McKain pretty much summed up my thoughts on the situation. Zito is not worth the money he got, but neither were almost any of the free agent signings this offseason (sans Schmidt.) He'll fill the void in the rotation though, but that could be a *more* difficult contract if he regresses. I knew for his age and track record that the cash per year would be pretty shocking, but it's hard to look at all the years he's locked up despite his durability. At least the Giants went for broke with the big move though, that's more than I can say about my pathetic Reds.

I'm sorry I'm getting sick of this crap of "oh no baseball salaries are way out of control crap"

Athletes in general are like entertainers. Marlon Brando got paid 3.7m in 1976 for the original Superman movie(you know how small of a role that was), Micheal Keaton was offered 20m for the third batman movie which he didn't take, movie actors make more money, but fans/media dont ***** about them, they happen to have shittier morals than athletes.

As a diehard football fanatic, I would love the NFLPA to go on strike because the crap they have to deal with and shitty money there making.

Shitty money? Getting paid millions of dollars to play a game for a living is shitty money?

In the meantime I (was) out in the middle of the persion gulf getting paid ~45K/year

Shitty money? Are you on crack?

I understand why they make the money they do, but there's nothing wrong with keeping it under control. Someone getting paid 11 mil per year when they're not even that good is just riddiculous.

And before you spit back the usual "Well, if they don't get the money the owners will pocket it" mantra...

If the owners didn't have to pay their players 10+ mil per year they wouldn't have to charge us 50 bucks to get into a game and 8 bucks for a beer.

It basically breaks down to supply and demand the heart and soul of business, you were in SD right? You saw how outragous the housing is over there? Well all over cali, ny and ect, basically your going to pay what the market value is, there is nothing you can do about it unfortunatly.

Yeah NFL players are underpaid compared to the other 3, also they take a beating like hell, but yet they paid like slaves. You have GMs who can cut a player anytime they want, but when a player asks for more money he gets criticized.

Not all football players get paid millions of dollars. The beating they take, the crap they gota deal with is slave crap, I was using it as an analogy. I'm just saying how ****ed up the NFL system really is.

And yea anyone who makes 45k a year and dont have to worry about expensives since you were in the Navy can make it anywhere. I was talking about in general though.

How is it ****ed up? what is the minimum? I'm sure it's over 100K which is good money.

If they didn't love the game so much they would find work elsewhere.

I would love to get paid >2x the amount the Navy payed me to play a game for a living, no matter what kind of perverbial beatings might be involved.

If you compare it to the NHL, NBA, and MLB salaries, NFL is salary is ****ed up.

But that's the problem. It shouldn't be made by comparisson, and that's why the salaries are ****ed up to being with.

Just because Toronto's GM decides Vernon Wells is worth 126 mil for 7 years doesn't mean that the next FA who comes out that's better than Vernon Wells is worth more than that. Perhaps it just means that Tornto's GM is stupid?

Of course NFL salary is "****ed up" if you compare it to the MLB (or the NBA) because they're the ones that are out of control....well, at least MLB is. I don't pay that much attention to the NBA.

Well people can spend whatever they want on anything, when the motorolla razr first came out it was 700$, some people bought it, were they stupid? Thats where our opinion comes into play, allot of people would say there stupid for spending that much money, personally I dont care because its there money and thats how want to spend it, then thats up to them.

Also if Toronto's GM is paying Wells 126m, doesn't mean he is going to get all that because of Canada and the currency rate, but anyways I agree with you just because FA A got this much, doesn't mean FA B deserves the same money.

Now if a GM pays a players 10+M and gets criticized, but why cant you guys ever criticize hollywood, actors make about 10-30m for a freaking movie.

Who says I don't critisize people getting paid millions to make a movie?

I just don't do so in a baseball forum.

And I'm glad you agree with me that player A getting paid X amount of money doesn't neccesarily mean player B should get paid >X even if he happens to be a better player.

Too bad the MLBPA or MLB GMs don't agree, and since they don't Gil Meche is getting 11 mil per year, Ted Lilly is getting 10 mil per year, and now Barry Zito is getting 18 mil per year.

There go the Giants again setting the bar w/ a contract, just like Bonds 13 years earlier.
