He's been out with an arm injury. They were fine with Urbina as the closer, but they signed Percival anyway.

Which FA has been a complete bust for the Tigers? Percival or Magglio Ordonez.

It just shows you that signing FAs is not what it's cracked up to be.

It could be worse. Tigers could have overpaid Pavano and Beltre.

Neither Steak. Tiger team and fans knew when they had signed Magglio of his history with being hurt. They only hoped that he could stay healthy, but he didn't. He's not a bust in my book for the Tigers. He's only had 10 ABs this season with the Tigers, that's really not enough to be able to judge.

As for Percival, the signing was a good one. I'm not familar with all the details, but I know that Tigers didn't like Urbina as closer and they wanted to get a more experienced closer, hence why they signed Percival. Not to mention, at the time, an added plus was that Percival was friends with some other free agents, and the fans thought that Percival may have been able to talk more players into signing with the Tigers. Kind of like a domino effect, remember when Tigers signed Vina, Rondell White, etc. in the previous offseason. People saw Tigers making these moves, and hence part of the reason why Pudge and Urbina signed.

Percival has had a declining strikeout rate and health problems for the past two years.

He was activated today. And they were not fine with Uribina as closer.

I thought signing Ordonez to a crazy contract was beyond stupid. I know Illitch wanted to get a big FA prize, but c'mon. Dombrowski wanted no part of Maggs yet Illitch broke the bank for him.

Percival pitched a scoreless inning the other day. As far as Urbina, he's kinda like watching Dotel close. It's not pretty and can often end in disaster.

why sign a pitcher with rickety arm (good stuff of course but who knows how long he can last) to a deal longer than a year? beats me. same goes for magg pipes.

Remember when Urbina was the most valuable pitcher for the Expos? He either won or saved most of the Expos' wins in 1998. Urbina became a washed-up closer by the time Montreal finally traded him.

Percival is now out for the year and possibly into retirement.

    Likely:

Troy Percival was told by Dr. Lewis Yocum he'd have to rest for two months, so he likely will miss the rest of the season because of a a partial muscle tear in his right forearm.
If he needs surgery, it will likely come in the offseason. Kyle Farnsworth figures to close for the Tigers for the rest of the year. Fernando Rodney and Franklyn German can fill in when he serves the suspension that will likely be announced soon.
