Indians The Worst Bullpen Gets More Help

Indians signed RHP Matt Herges and RHP Jack Cassel to minor league contracts and invited them to spring training.
Herges became a free agent when the Rockies declined their $2.5 million option on him for 2009 and he managed only a minor league deal after posting a 5.04 ERA last season. He'll battle for a middle relief gig. Cassel is the brother of the Patriots' quarterback, but figures to begin the year at Triple-A and would be a marginal long reliever.
Herges has had a very inconsistent career. He has had good years and very bad years. He never backs up his good years with another one so maybe the Indians will catch him on the good side of the cycle. Herges helped the Rockies win the NL pennant in '07 only to pitch horribly in '08. Maybe the Indians can get lucky.

EDIT: The Indians also added Vinnie Chulk to a minor league deal. He could serve as a reliever at some point during '09.

Or maybe the Indians don't get lucky and Herges blows a few games for them.

Chulk is a good signing, he'll help them out a few times

Hopefully Adam Miller who is a stud in our farm system can stay healthy and if he can't help in the rotation he can help in the bullpen.
