I hear that too CRF, but I also heard Krivsky and Narron say that they are very happy with Hatteberg at 1B. Could mean nothing but it was discouraging to hear to say the least.

    I guess we'll see.

Also, Griffey Junior is locked in . I honestly do not remeber seeing him look this way since his M's days I am serious. He is not missing too many pitches and he is just tearing the cover off the ball. Two doubles and a HR today. Insane.

    Cronin nabs recruit

BY BILL KOCH | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

It took Mick Cronin exactly four days to land his first recruiting commitment as the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball coach.

John Williamson, a 6-foot-6 forward from Cincinnati State College, said today that he will play next season at UC for Cronin, who was introduced as UC’s head coach on Friday.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to so since I was in 10th grade and started taking basketball serious,” Williamson said. “I always liked (UC’s) style of play. When coach Cronin got the job, it was a no-brainer. I’ve known him for a long time.”

Williamson, who played at Marion-Franklin High School in Columbus, averaged 27.4 points and 11.7 reoubnds this past season at Cincinnati State playing for former UC player Andre Tate.

    Yeah, I agree about Griffey.

As for them saying they're happy... I'm not surprised. They aren't going to say: "We don't really like Hatteberg at 1B. He really isn't a starter."

I was also stunned to see them put a graphic on the screen that showed each player in the current projected Opening Day lineup's OPS last year. Chris said that it looked like someone like Womack could use an increase in OPS this year through getting on base more often. I was surprised to see that from them.

From The Post's Trent Rosencrans' blog:

    Just talked to John Williamson

    What a nice kid.
John said he's always wanted to be a Bearcat and now he will be.
He had been recruited by Mick Cronin for Murray State, but when Cronin was named the coach at UC, it was an easy decision Williamson said.
Williamson is 6-6 1/2 and his coach at Cincinnati State, former Bearcat Andre Tate, said he's "Ruben Patterson with a jump shot."
Williamson said he talks with Devan Downey a bit and is excited about getting out in the open court with Devan on some fast breaks. And considering what I've heard about Williamson, every Bearcat fan should be excited about that as well.
Cronin made his reputation as a recruiter and it looks like it's already panning out.

Reds beat up on the Devil Rays today. Harang cruised through 5 innings, but ran into some trouble in the 6th and didn't manage to get an out; Jonny Gomes took him deep and Harang ended up getting charged with 5 runs since he left the game with men on base and Belisle gave up a three-run shot to Ty Wigginton. Dunn had a nice game with a two-run shot but he struck out twice, while Griffey drove in three. Nice job by the Reds bullpen after the Wigginton shot, Hammond, Mercker and Coffey closed out the game.

I should be able to watch most of that one.

A note on Harang's outing today: he is battling the flu, so that might have contributed to him wearing out in the 6th. I'll take it if he keeps pitching like he had this spring before this game.

I went to Rick's Tavern tonight to see Kennedy and Huggins do one last show, though it wasn't on the radio. Hicks and Corie Blount were there and took part in the show, and Ryan Fletcher but just to watch. I saw channels 5, 9, 12, and 19 cameras there, along with Rosencranz and various other newspaper guys.

Andy was hilarious and he took some nice shots at Zimpher and the rest of her administration, but he and Huggs were both very clear that they love the city and the university, just not the people in charge. My favorite quote was along the lines of "If we ran the team like this university is run, we wouldn't win a game. No morale, no communication, no logic."

Huggins shared his opinions about Zimpher in a completely logical way, and pretty much completely owned her without namecalling in any way. He talked about marketing the university for what it is, which he said is a great thing, instead of setting illogical goals for it in the future. Andy was slightly meaner about everything, ripping on Zimpher's asinine policies. I believe Huggs brought up the fact that at the last university Zimpher was at, the graduation rate for black students was 17% when she left. Bob talked about how ridiculous it was that his ten players were supposed to be the people that the university most worried about graduating, and he talked about how you actually have to earn a degree from UC, even if you're an athlete.

You could really see just how undyingly loyal Andy was to Huggs, and it's really admirable. He also said that the university still wanted him to do things that he'd never think of doing if he wanted to get the job, i.e. badmouthing Huggs. It became even clearer that Bob was fired over what simply amounts to a petty personal feud with Huggins, and the support at Rick's was overwhelming. The place was totally packed two hours before the show even started.

All-in-all, it was great to see Huggs, Hicks, and Kennedy one last time before they head their separate ways, and they deserve success far more than the petty administration at the university does. I'm trutly gonna miss all three, and I'll be rooting big-time for Kansas State, Ole Miss, and wherever Eric ends up in the draft.

I'll be rooting for Cronin and UC.

I'm going out on a limb and saying Cronin might have UC better than those other teams before long. I think he just might turn into a better coach than either Huggins or Kennedy. Great job by Nancy in allowing him to be selected.

As I said after Huggins was fired... it's time to get over him and move on. He's gone and won't be back. He had his run and that's it.

Certain industry sources VERY close to the situation have indicated to me that there might have been "other" things behind Huggins' firing, but I'm not going to get into that right here.

Blah blah blah I'm CRF and I make shit up blah blah blah

Anonymous sources are an excuse to make up bullshit. Cronin's a good coach and a good recruiter, but he's also a dickhead with just as many personal and player issues as Huggins.

Cronin had his WLW show tonight. Here are some of the key points from Rosecrans' blog:

*Mick just said that his wife is pregnant, he wants to raise his family in Cincinnati and will go nowhere else as long as he can be successful and keep Bearcat land happy.

*Had a team meeting last night and individual meetings with current players today.

*Mick said that he is shooting for filling 5 or 6 scholarships, wants to get to about 11 scholarship players this year to balance things out going forward. There could be some possibility of a couple walk-ons.

*Also, began the show with heavy, heavy praise of Devan Downey's character, heart, and leadership ability.

He also claims that he learned "from Rick Pitino" that if you have 4 scholarships available, you should recruit as if you have seven.

Hoping to have all five current scholly athletes stay, will give five or six scholarships next season and possibly add lower level "walk on" talent who would pay to play for UC ala Jamal Lucas (though he did not give that example specifically).

*Mick confirmed he was recruiting high level guys for his last scholly at Murray trying to hit a home run, so he's in the living rooms of a lot of guys he may otherwise not have been.

*Mick will handle scheduling. I will schedule depending on the strength of the team. Will strike a balance.

*Perfect world Mick would like the athletes to press, a shot blocker, and versitale forwards 4/3's 3/2's 3/4's. Offensively a fan of doing whatever is dictated by the personnel, but working for mostly easy baskets.

Said the whole thing begins with defense. Aggressive coach.

*Chris Goggin and Matt Grady will be coming with Mick. He will add a veteran/asst. head coach from the Div. I ranks. Can't say who it is yet. Hopes to have it rapped up by Tues. (a high-major Division I assistant coach)

*Mick said he is a man to man guy, but will play zone if he thinks it will help him win.

*Said he was recruiting a 6'2" player at the JC tourney in Kansas, talked with him on the phone tonight...

Making up nothing. Very close friends to our family who are very close to the situation. Period.

Not the same sources who indicated to me hours before Cronin was hired the other day that he was going to be as soon as the NIT ended for UC, but reliable nonetheless.

    Keep pretending though.

I think Cronin seems like a really nice guy too. I haven't heard a thing about his recruits to Murray State having any issues either.

I find it hard to believe that any actual issues Huggins had would be kept under wraps this long. And the fact that Nancy Zimpher is your wife doesn't really help your credibility.

And I honestly can't find it in me to support Cronin. As far as I'm concerned, the man's a traitor. You don't leave UC to go coach at Louisville with Rick Pitino. He's a good coach, but he's nothing more than a Judas to me right now.
