Laynce Nix has elected to become a free agent.
Nix became a free agent after refusing an outright assignment to the minor leagues. The 30-year-old outfielder missed about a month this past season due to a left ankle injury, but batted .291/.350/.455 with four home runs and 18 RBI over 165 at-bats. He should have a relatively easy time finding a job as a left-handed power bat off the bench.
Not a bad bat to have off the bench.

Nix certainly isn't a bad option off the bench, but isn't irreplaceable either. I hope he catches on somewhere though where he can get a few more AB's.

    Re: Random Reds Rumblings

Reds signed LHP Dontrelle Willis to a minor league contract and are expected to use him as a reliever.
This is by no means an indication that LHP Arthur Rhodes is prepared to turn down his arbitration offer and elect free agency; the Reds are simply taking a flyer on the former phenom. Willis has a lot of work to do in the offseason if he expects to be on the team's opening day 25-man roster. The D-Train will likely be stationed at Triple-A Louisville and serve as an emergency minor league arm as he attempts to resurrect his career.
Glad he's not wasting the Giants money and time anymore.

If the Reds' depth of pitching wasn't so good... I'd be frightened.

    Re: Random Reds Rumblings

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Reds have joined the hunt for free agent outfielder Scott Podsednik.
Podsednik, a left-handed batter, could platoon with right-handed slugger Jonny Gomes in left field and could bat leadoff on the days that he plays. It's not a bad fit, really, and the 34-year-old speedster isn't exactly in high demand. A quick one-year deal should do the trick if Cincy is truly interested. Podsednik hit .297/.342/.382 with 35 steals this past season.
    I actually like this idea.

I am okay with it as long as this isn't a solution but just an addition. He would be a fine addition to the roster for the right role, but this lineup really does need another high production bat IMO.

The Reds are looking to sign Jeremy Hermida to a minor league deal. It is also rumored the Reds have an offer on the table for Edgar Renteria.

Its official, Hermida is a Red. Jocketty strikes again. Hermida if given a chance could surprise.

    He's proven he's never anything more than a 4th outfielder/AAAA bust.

Edgar Renteria is a Red. Who doesn't like a World Series MVP?

Not a bad signing to back up Janish and Renteria has also said he is open to playing some at second base. Jocketty strikes again!

    Re: Random Reds Rumblings

Reds signed OF Fred Lewis to a one-year, $900,000 contract.
He could earn more with incentives. Lewis, 30, batted .262/.332/.414 with eight homers, 36 RBI and 17 stolen bases with the Blue Jays last season. Many teams looked at him as a potential fourth outfielder this winter, but there's a chance he could split left field duties with Jonny Gomes this season.
Lewis is a good pickup and has a much better shot of playing time than Hermida. Lewis has always possessed decent on base skills but his strikeouts always seemed to come up in big situations when he was with the Giants. His defense has always been suspect too. He's a good backup to Gomes but wouldn't trust him as a starter.

This Reds pitching staff is brutal right now.

Looks like at best a split and quite possibly another series loss to another terrible team (similar to the D-Backs). Not looking good this year.
