Bruce, Not Votto, Get $$$

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Reds have signed outfielder Jay Bruce to a six-year, $51 million contract extension.
The deal also contains a club option for a seventh year that would bring the total worth to $63 million. Bruce was up for salary arbitration for the first time this winter and could have started down a path of negotiating raises each year. Instead he opted to cash in now, committing Thursday to an extended stay in Cincinnati. These deals often go well for both sides.

Am I the only one surprised it is Bruce and not Votto get extended? I think Bruce deserved to get extended but not before Votto.

Joey Votto was an automatic resign this year. He isn't even up for arbitration yet. No reason to extend him if he's already under team control.

I dont have the direct quotes in front of me but Votto in past interviews doesn't seem like a guy to want to tie himself down to that sort of long term deal or hasn't thought about it. He's also a lot older (Bruce is 24, Votto is 27 wow I am actually OLDER than Votto by a few months) Votto's going to get his but I think he is more thinking about keeping the options open should he want to go home to play or wait to sign longer term deal. I mean he is the reigning MVP and we just saw Ryan Howard at what 32 signing a 7 year deal at 25 mil per. Votto>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Howard in the NL.

Guys the answer to all this shenanigans is this: Votto's under team control this year and possibly next year, and if he's not under team control next year he'll at the very least go to arbitration. There's no reason to extend him right now. Therefore they didn't. I agree with Leo, I'm not sure why you're questioning why Votto isn't extended. They'll extend him at the earliest right before he goes to Arby. no need for hostility. Just the simple fact that there's no financial or contractual need for the Reds to extend Votto.

Bruce and Votto are both up for Arbitration (Bruce qualified as a Super 2). The number being bandied about for Votto was 7-8 mil. Maybe Votto rather wait than to sign. I mean you're looking at a guy who the past couple seasons has been right up there with anyone in baseball (including Pujols) the Reds waited a season to long to possibly sign Votto to a long term deal... for now. And Votto from quotes I've read other places just hasn't thought about that long term yet.

It wouldn't be if the book was already closed on whether or not Votto can be extended and/or if extending Bruce makes it so they cannot extend Votto.

But neither of these are true, so asking why Bruce is getting extended and not Votto makes no sense.

All I said it I found it surprising they didn't lock up their MVP before Bruce. It does make sense! I am surprised by it and expressed that. God ****ing christ! How dare I?? It in no way did it deserve the response you gave.

It makes perfect sense. It takes two to come to an agreement and perhaps they just haven't come to one with Votto yet.
