Reds top pitching prospect Thompson called up

The Reds announced Friday that Daryl Thompson will be called up from Triple-A to make his MLB debut Saturday against the Yankees.
Thompson has taken a step forward as a prospect this season, going 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA and 78/18 K/BB ratio in 89 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. At just 22 years old he's being rushed to the majors, but likely has a better chance to put together some decent outings than Homer Bailey, who he'll be replacing in the rotation. Facing the Yankees is a tough first assignment and Thompson shouldn't be counted on initially even in NL-only leagues.

Talk about throwing someone into the fire. First start, on the road, in inter-league (ie +one more hitter) and in Yankee Stadium.

I am actually more excited to watch him pitch than I was Homer Bailey this year. This is going to be fun! Perhaps the Kearns/Felo deal pays off here?

meh the whole new pitcher thing seems to just work against us. I just hope this is sort of a spot deal and not an extended stay, I'd hate to see Thompson go like Bailey did.

No, but Thompson has better numbers than Bailey. So in that sense, he is our top pitching prospect.

Bailey: 4.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 55 SO, 31 BB
Thompson: 3.25 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 22 SO, 4 BB

Although Thompsons numbers are only on 27.2 IP, they are still very good numbers.

Thompson has looked pretty good. Not dominating, but he got out of a jam in the 2nd inning with the bases loaded and no outs. And he seems to have some good velocity on the fastball as well as a pretty good curveball...
