Reds Guardado not likely to immediately become team's closer

Reds | Guardado not likely to immediately become team's closer

Mark Sheldon, of Cincinnati.Reds.MLB.com, reports Cincinnati Reds RP Eddie Guardado (elbow, back) isn't likely to become the team's closer immediately when he is activated from the disabled list. Reds manager Jerry Narron said, "We wouldn't put him in the ninth inning that first day back, maybe the second day. It wouldn't be fair to him to put him in the ninth inning with a one-run lead the first time out, even though he'd love it."

well, i doesn't mean anything really, what good would he do at closer, when you aren't having leads in the 9th inning, not having a good closer is probably the last thing you need to worry about

No quite Everday Eddie is supposed to be back in 2-3 weeks at last check, I wonder if this is Narron's way of saying essentially Weathers is all but gone. I wouldn't be surprised if they hold onto Weathers for awhile, in the hopes of finding a bigger spender to then trade him when Eddie is close to his comeback and hope that Guardado is good for some cheap saves and the possibility of moving him before the August deadline (although if he builds value back up, I couldn't see him going unclaimed.)

I'd be shocked if we didn't move him, provided he pitches effectively when he returns.
I bet one legend that keeps recurring throughout history, in every culture, is the story of Popeye.

What type of prospects do you think the Reds could get for David Weathers?

The way he's pitched this year, I'd say a B to B+ level prospect. I'd be thrilled with that.

I see the Reds having a pretty good future though. With the likes of Homer Bailey, Bronson Arroyo, and Aaron Harang they have a pretty good young starting 3 in there rotation. As for the bats, they are also pretty good with Griffey, Hamilton, Phillips, Encarnacion, Gonzalez, and even Ross who is struggling this year.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard that in the last 10 years.

That is very true, you would be a rich man. But on paper the Reds do look like they have a good group of young players for the future. Now to get them all to put it together on the field.
