Its almost gametime! The Reds have the pleasure of facing a team coming off an unbelievable opener. Can we extinguish the fire? Or will the Pirates continue to have enough to take down division foes?
It is Paul Maholm going against Matt Belisle. Both young arms with bottom of the rotation talent. Each of these two pitchers are trying to establish themselves this season. Which one will be the victor?
Here are the lineups and how each hitter has faired against the opposing pitcher in their careers:
Pirates
Chris Duffy CF 1 for 1 with an RBI double
Jack Wilson SS 5 for 9 / 1 BB and 2 RBI (biggest hit was 1 double)
Jason Bay LF 4 for 11 / 3 BB and 7 RBI / K 5 times (biggest hit was 2 doubles)
Adam LaRoche 1B 2 for 5 / K 2 times
Ronny Paulino C 1 BB
Xavier Nady RF 4 for 6 with 2 doubles and no RBIs
Jose Bautista 3B 0 for 8 with 3 K. 1 BB
Jose Castillo 2B 0 for 4 with 1 BB
Paul Maholm P 1 for 1 and 2 BB
Reds
Ryan Freel CF 9 for 23 with 1 BB. 3 doubles and 5 K
Brandon Phillips 2B 2 for 8 with 1 HR. K 1 time
Adam Dunn LF 2 for 20 with 4 walks and 9 K (UGLY)
Edwin Encarnacion 3B 4 for 18 with 3 doubles, 5 BB, 4 K
Ken Griffey Jr. RF 2 for 9 with 4 K
Jeff Conine 1B Never Faced
Alex Gonzalez SS Never Faced
David Ross C 3 for 5 with 2 HRs and 5 RBI. 1 BB
Matt Belisle P Never Faced
So the Pirates have had plenty of success against Belisle and Maholm has pretty much calmed the Reds bats. The numbers say that Maholm is in the better position to win. Lets hope that the Reds can surpass their current struggles in the last few games due to cold weather and somehow hit Maholm like they never have.
From what Trent's blog says, there are still snow flurries in the Queen City and that might have an effect on Reds bats.
Lets get this win Reds!
