Thread: Ryan Wagner

    Reds Ryan Wagner

What happened to this guy? I remember that he was drafted the same year as Chad Cordero, and scouts had the same expectations for each. Wagner made it to the majors in less than a year after being drafted, and from what I remember, pitched well that first year.

Then, everything fell apart. Whats he doing now? Is he still the closer of the future, or have the Reds moved on from that thought?

Wagner is in Louisville now playing for the Reds AAA affiliate. The FO has figured out that he was called up far too soon by the previous regime. They and we are in hopes that he can take his time in the minor leagues and figure out how to be dominant at the MLB level. He is going to have to learn to adjust to MLB talent as they have adjusted to his.

As for the closer of the future, I believe that we have found it in Coffey. Wagner would be a nice set-up man for him though if he can get it together.

Wags is not it, at least not yet. His head has been screwed up, much like Brian Reith's head was by Jim Bowden.

Why force Wagner to be a set up man? There were whispers next year they may try him as a starter in AAA, don't remember where I read it, but that'd be interesting, no?

He doesn't have a history of being a starter or the arm endurance to do so.

Yeah, but I've heard that they may move him there to maximize his pitching potential. I thought it was stupid when I heard it too.

His greatest potential is as a closer. His stuff is filthy, but his head isn't there.

Actually he did start at University of Houston for awhile until they turned him into their closer

well maybe it was in high school or something, but I know that I have heard somewhere that he has started before. If not in high school, he definitely was a starter in a sim league........so he must be able to do it in real life too.

Ryan Wagner can be added to the list of players screwed up by Jim Bowden. Thanks Jim! You're still screwing this team 3 years after being canned!

No one's screwing Ryan Wagner but himself. I guarantee you ask him that question and he would tell you it's on him. I have confidence that Wagner will be back up here, maybe not until next year however.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind trading our Ryan Wagner for the Ryan Wagner that developed for the Mets in my sim league.

As for the real Wagner, I am not having much confidence at this point. He seems to one attitude problem after another and I wouldn't be surprised if this performance could be due to his anger of being down in AAA. I know he hasn't taken it well before.
