Cubs Reporter suggests steroids on Ryan Theriot

    Small hitter, big problem

When even Theriot raises suspicions, baseball's earned cynicism

    BY RICK TELANDER Sun-Times Columnist
</p> You, sir, all 5-11, 175 pounds of you, are doing devious things.

To wit, Theriot -- no disrespect, but if he's 5-11, I'm 6-12 -- hit two home runs Wednesday night at Wrigley Field against the Padres, giving him five times more home runs in 33 games this year than he hit all last season.
Brrinnnng! Eee -- ah! Eee-ah! Zzzt! Zzzzt!
That rings the steroid/HGH/ whatever-designer-drug-is-in bell, doesn't it?
Well, yes, ''The Riot'' hit only one dinger in 2008 and only five so far this year.
But if he were, say, Manny Ramirez (37 home runs in 2008), he would have just hit his 185th homer of 2009.

What a joke. And this is exactly why the Cubs have not won a world series in 101 years. Our media is brutal! This guy is just trying to sell newspapers in a rough time so he uses steroids, names a Cub and mocks baseball. Cubs do one thing wrong, and every reporter in town is running to write the first "curse" article. It's BS. This article made me upset, what do you guys think?

I think people are starting to be a bit too quick in pulling the steroid card, myself.

It's a bit dumb to me. I mean, it's a little stupid to pull the steroid card without actual evidence, but to accuse a guy who has 5 HR (in a hitter's park) is just ridiculous.

If he hits a HR at PetCo Park then we'll talk.

    I agree whole heatedly.
This guy pulled the card without having anything to prove it, other than the fact that he hit a few more home runs.

Re: Reporter suggests steroids on Ryan Theriot

Guys have never EVER developed more power as they got older...

    (Only counts full seasons)

    Theriot- 3, 1, now 5.

    Johnny Damon- 6, 8, then 18

    Edgar Renteria- 5, 4, 3, 11, 16

    Adam Laroche- 13, 20, 32

I mean, guys show added power as they age. So, it's ridiculous to think that now that he's getting consistent at bats, and more experience, his having 5 freaking HR is a sign of steroids...

Even if it was abnormal to develop power as you age I don't think an increase of HRs from 3 to 5 is something to start throwing out accusations over.

Re: Reporter suggests steroids on Ryan Theriot

Well, his point is that 5 right now translates to 20 or 25 through the full season. Of course, Theriot could go the rest of the year without hitting 1. Still, no reason to accuse him of using steroids.

I think the worst part of this is his stupid analogy with Manny. Just because he has 5 HR's when he had 1 last year doesn't mean you can multiply Manny's total of all of last year by 5. That doesn't even make any sense at all.

he didnt suggest steroids seriously. It was highly tongue in cheek. I disagree with the article as the sun times is not the place for that.
