    Cubs Ryno's Moving Up

Ryne Sandberg is taking another step toward his goal of becoming a major-league manager. The Hall of Fame second baseman was named manager of the Cubs' Double-A affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies, on Wednesday after spending the last two seasons managing the Class-A Peoria Chiefs. "First things first. Just learn along the way. That's the way I've been taking this thing," Sandberg said. "I want to learn, I want to be good at it. Like the players, I hope one day to be at the major-league level. That's kind of all of our goals in the minor leagues. I'm no different than the players."
It would be an absolute joy to watch Ryno manage the Cubs someday. I have always liked Ryne and think he is the best second baseman of all-time.

I totally agree Reefer, he's a great guy and would be an excellent major league manager. I'm excited for his future here. It's gotta be an interesting road having to make his way through the minors again, this time as a manager and watch all the players make the same journey he did. Very interesting

he's (ryno) not the best, but certainly my favorite!

but anyways, its kinda cool to see a HOF player willing to put in the time and effort to be a manager. So many of the HOF'ers who want to manage seem to only want to do it on the major league level, and arent willing to go to the minors to learn. hell, mike schmidt couldnt do it. he lasted, what? one year?

Yes, I would take Ryno over all the players mentioned. Hornsby played in a different era with not even close to the talent Sandberg faced. Sandberg was the ultimate weapon at second base. Power, speed and defense. I'm definitely not afraid of saying he is the best.

Sandberg showed me that he is willing to put up with a lot last season. He signs autographs for about 3o minutes before every game. He is a credit to the game.
