Theo not only wasn't taking a promotion. The A's had more leverage. Beane could still come back. Which he obviously did go back to the A's last minute. That was never an option for Theo. He was on the last year of a deal and would just come to the Cubs in 2012 anyways. Red Sox couldn't let the deal fall apart. That's why they never walked away when the Cubs didn't offer what they wanted. That's why this deal went past the allowed 7 day window. That's why the deal got done beside no compensation being agreed to.

I read that the A's were choosing between 3 guys. Not getting some crazy package like cj claims.

Though it's kind of hard to claim precedent on something that never happened.

I'm pretty sure it was in the movie, which is an accurate depiction of how awesome Billy Beane was that one time years ago.

They only mentioned Youk (AKA Beans) in the movie. They made no mention of 2-3 top prospects.

Play nice. If that were to happen the Sox wouldn't get any prospects, let alone a top prospect.

I can't find the article I read over the last two weeks that went into great detail about the Beane/Boston situation. I did find this:

    BUT WHAT KIND OF COMPENSATION?

In both Moneyball (the Michael Lewis bestseller about the A’s under Beane) and Feeding the Monster (Seth Mnookin’s tome about the Red Sox’ construction of a champion), the Sox and A’s -- with Beane negotiating for the Sox, and Oakland Assistant GM Paul DePodesta in charge of negotiations for the A’s -- are said to have worked out a deal to send Beane to Boston for Kevin Youkilis.

In point of fact, noted one person familiar with the talks, while the A’s and Sox discussed different trade possibilities, with Youkilis being in the conversation, there never was a final deal in place by the time that Beane’s change of heart scuttled the deal.

Still, that connection of Beane to Youkilis (at the time, a promising yet undervalued third base prospect whose tremendous plate discipline had yielded high OBPs but no real power) serves as the closest thing to a precedent in determining the trade value of a GM.

So at the time Boston was going to give up a guy with upside, but wasn't viewed as a top prospect.... hmmmmmmm. So you think the Cubs should have to give up a top prospect? The best prospect the Cubs would give up is Trey McNutt. He's not someone who's a top prospect in the MLB. Though sadly the Cubs best pitching prospect. If you think you're getting Jackson or Szczur keep dreaming.

A's had more leverage in the Beane situation and still weren't getting what was viewed as a top prospect at the time.

I don't think you should undervalue McNutt, the guy was a top 50 MLB prospect at the beginning of the season. He struggled of course, but from what I've read, blisters and injuries played a great role in that. He might slip out of the top 100 this upcoming year, but I think he'll be right back to where he was come 2013.

He absolutely was a top prospect in the eyes of the A's.

According to you. What matters more is what the Cubs/Red Sox thought of their own prospect in these situations. If the Red Sox really wanted Jay Jackson or Chris Carpenter I doubt we'd be discussing any of this. The Red Sox appeared willing to give up Yuk. The Red Sox want prospects the Cubs hold in a high regard.
