When will David Ortiz hit a home run?

In one of the most interesting subplots of the 2009 season, David Ortiz has now gone 31 games to start the season without hitting a home run. 116 at-bats and he has yet to stroke a long one! This is amazing given what he has done in his first six seasons in Beantown.

I'd say it will happen once Francona wises up and stops hitting him third. There is no reason for him to still be hitting in the top half of the order.

I know he has a handful of them, but imagine if Vegas took bets on if Ortiz would hit a triple before a homer how much you could have cleaned up on a bet like that.

Oh and David Ortiz's slugging % is LESS than his OBP%. .319 SLG%. Willy Taveras is out slugging Ortiz by about 100 points.

Ortiz's offense is to Boston as Jeter's defense is to the Yanks. It will be interesting to see how each team handles things.

Francona has faith in his players turning it around, if anyone remembers Ortiz's first season with Boston he was hitting .150 through June and Francona kept putting him in the lineup, and he was rewarded when Ortiz started producing. Dont change things, he'll get it going soon enough. No reason to panic, we are winning games, so no need to change everybody around to fix 1 guys problems.

Francona wasn't managing in Ortiz's first year with Boston. Ortiz is also not even close to the same player as he was in 2003. He needs to be moved down and is hurting the Red Sox. They win ballgames but not as many as they could with him lower in the lineup. Huge holes in the #3 slot cause huge problems.

The problem with sticking it out is that this isn't a question of him not producing, more of him losing bat speed. I would hope he can rebound to a decent line, but he is never going to be the player he used to be. Probably not even close.

We have the 3rd best record in MLB, thats winning a lot of games. You don't move 2 guys that are producing in their current spots to move 1 guy who isn't performing. Ortiz isn't our problem. Losing Youk to the DL, having Peds, Drew hurt and inconsistency from the starters. Those are all bigger problems than Ortiz right now.

You should be running away with the division is the problem. Ortiz is a rally killer!! Yes, losing Youkilis is a big blow but so is leaving Ortiz in the prime spot in the order. Yes you do move players that are succeeding to spots where they can produce more. Its happen since the dawn of baseball, why stop now?
