Red Sox Sox agree now with Mark Kotsay

    Mark Kotsay set to re-sign - BostonHerald.com

This is a big signing for the Red Sox. As the backup 1B, he can also serve as our 5th OF saving a roster spot for somewhere else. He played really well for us last year. This is another example of the Red Sox making a quality signing.

This combined with the Smoltz, Penny, Baldelli signings could be huge for the Sox come the middle of the season where their superior depth compared to the Yankees could be huge

I expect to see us likely ink Varitek next. I'm not sold on the fact that Theo is necessarily compiling this pitching depth in order to move Buccholz or Bowden for a young, long-term solution at catcher. The reason I believe that is, I think the Red Sox would some what like to hold out for when Mauer becomes a FA in 2010, thus find a short term solution at C until that time. I know Theo won't bank on that happening and will certainly explore his options but I believe he has that sitting in the back of his mind.

I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

I can't agree with you more. I wouldn't be shocked if the Red Sox offer 6 years 160 for a guy like mauer. Although having a young guy always keeps your options open, maybe you move him if u get mauer but... I really want the picks for Varitek, I'd rather sign another veteran if you want to try and get mauer. 2 1st rounders for Tek... i mean i think the value of them is too high to give up but thats me

I'm not sure anyone wants to sign Tek for that very fact, I believe he will pretty much have to take whatever Boston offers him or he may have to wait a while before another team approaches him, if that ever happens.

I'd love to know what Boras was thinking when he didn't accept arbitration

He was thinking that he's Scott Boras and is convinced he can find insane amounts of money for his clients.
