    Red Sox A Penny Saved

The Red Sox are closing in on a deal with free agent Brad Penny, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.
A Penny signing wouldn't necessarily take the Red Sox out of the mix for Derek Lowe or Kenshin Kawakami, but it would add depth and give the team another starter with plenty of upside. Penny, a two-time All-Star, finished tied for first in the NL in wins in 2006 and third in ERA in 2007 before experiencing shoulder problems in a rough 2008 season.
I could see Penny being a good fit for many teams but I am not seeing it for the Red Sox. Penny belongs in the NL in a much less competitive division. I don;t blame Penny for wanting to play for the Saux but he isn't doing himself any favors pitching in the AL East. Its all reward for the Saux if this is true but i am just not seeing that much reward coming.

Brad Penny is set to be guaranteed $5 million as part of a one-year deal with the Red Sox, according to the Boston Herald.
He can make an additional $3 million in incentives. The contract is expected to be finalized on Monday.
The Red Sox also signed Josh Bard today. Not the answer at catcher but would make for a good backup.

I love this signing, this could indicate the end for Varitek as this probably signals a Wakefield move to the bullpen, cause they are going to want to give the 5 spot to Smoltz or a young guy

    Smoltz is closer material again.

These are a few good moves by the Sox. It's good they get Bard because he's not the answer at C, but in an emergency that they fail to get a decent starter, he COULD start. And Penny's a good rotation signing as well, I thought the Yankees should have looked further into him

I love the Penny signing, adds more pitching depth and is a low risk, high reward type of deal. If it doesn't work out for Penny this season, the BoSox are off the hook next year.

    That is so true
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett
