    WS Rings and Buckner

    ESPN - Tigers vs. Red Sox - Recap - April 08, 2008

So, at today's Red Sox home opener, they received their World Series Rings. The striking part of this game is that the ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Bill Buckner, in what was his first visit to Fenway since 1997. I imagined that after 2004, he would be more welcome there, but maybe he just has no interest in going to games. Does it strike you guys as odd that a guy who was so good for so long (albeit making one very very costly error) hasn't gone back to Fenway park in such a long time, and yet he was still supposedly well received?

Quite the show today for the Sox. Buckner was well received and they played well.
On a side note, Placido Polanco's long errorless streak (a major league record) ended on a throw that bounced past the 3B into the dugout allowing Manny Ramirez to score a run.

All I can say is that it is about ****ing time they did something special for Buckner. He should have been there Opneing Day throwing out pitches back in 2005. The man was treated horribly by the fans but most of all the media, mostly the media. The media plays a huge part in situations like this. Why do we even know Steve Bartman's name? It's horrible. It was great to hear the fans give him his due. And to see all of those Boston sports legends out there was a sight to see.

I was shocked that Buckner hadn't been back in so long, and even then it was as a coach for another team. But it is definitely nice to see the fans treat him well, because he deserves it.

Buckner was with the red Sox in 87 and came back in 1990 but was never given a tribute like this. Tribute is the wrong word but will have to do for now.
