Haren signs extension

Dan Haren signed a new contract with the D-backs for 4, possibly 5 years. Here are the terms of the new contract:

• 2009: $7.5 mil
• 2010: $8.25 mil
• 2011: $12.75 mil
• 2012: $12.75 mil
• 2013: $15.5 mil option

Not sure yet whether the option is club, player, or mutual.

This is a great move by the Diamondbacks. He's going to be a great help to their ballclub.

With all due respect to Billy Beane, Dan Haren > Greg Smith, Dana Eveland, Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, Chris Carter, and Alan Cunningham. Did anyone actually believe that the Dbags would've given up those six players if they didn't believe that Haren was better than all of them combined?

But I will say that because he, like Tim Hudson, relies on a split-fingered fastball, Tommy John might be in his future.

I'm interested, why does a s-f fastball mean tommy john? is it because of elbow motion?
