    D'Backs Byrnes to the DL

Eric Byrnes went on the DL yesterday with "leg issues" (it's his hamstrings). He has tried to play through this injury and it really hasn't worked out too well. He stole 50 bases last season, and has only attempted 7 this year, being successful in only 4. He is only hitting .219.

The D-backs recalled outfielder Alex Romero to take his spot on the roster.

"Hopefully, in 15 days, I'm ready to go and help us down the stretch," Byrnes said. "I think the most important thing is obviously getting healthy and being strong for the second half of the season."

He also said this about his legs: "Look, I couldn't run the same way, there's no doubt about that, I knew that," Byrnes said. "I'm not going to blame my hitting slump on my legs; I won't do it. Did it help? No, it definitely didn't help. That's something that I've gone through before. Look, no one is immune to that in here. You're starting to see that, even some of these young guys are starting to struggle. It's the reality of baseball. I mean, I went 9-for-95 before. I've dealt with things like this before."

Do you think his legs are the problem? Or is he genuinely slumping?

    Re: Byrnes to the DL

I do believe that his legs are really bothering him. He hasn't looked comfortable in the field and looked fidgity in the batter's box as of late. As for the slump issue, I don't think that's why he's on the DL. He's never been a scapegoat kinda guy, and even during that 9-for-95 streak (which was REALLY bad) he took it all in stride. So I don't think that the DL is any sort of a break for him.

sidenote - this is his first career trip to the DL.

I think it is a combination of both. His legs are bothering him, and it is probably effecting his play in the field and his offense. Some time on the D.L. should do him some good, not just for his body but also for his mind and being able to come back with a fresh outlook.

    Time to callup Carlos Quentin.

    Whoops.

Ya, the trading of Quentin looks like something the Diamondbacks will be regretting. He has already been much better than Byrnes on the field this year. You win some and you lose some though, as long as your not getting Richie Sexson.

It's obvious something is bothering him. And his legs are such a huge part of his game whether it be on the bases or in the field. He's better off getting the rest needed to make sure he's back at 100%. That is the kind of thing that is going to improve by "playing through the pain."

First time on the DL? Wow, that explains why the A's let him go I believe players have to be on the DL a minimum of 2 times a season to be on the A's...clearly, Byrnes doesn't meet that criteria.

Actually, way back when when he was with the A's, we weren't really known for using the DL a bazillion times a year. But I know what you mean. I wonder how he ever got away with that.

Zito was never on the DL and looked where it got him.

perhaps he would perform better on the DL? I'm glad we didn't keep him at this point obviously.

    Re: Byrnes to the DL

Byrnes has been gone for 25 games and the DBacks have fallen to pieces ever since. The Dbacks are 8-17 since then. Shows just how valuable Byrnes is to this team. He returns tonight against the Red Sox and they definitely need a dose of some of Eric's energy.

He is the leader of this team right now, and is showing all these young guys how to play in the bigs. He is a huge reason this team is as good as it is.

Eric Byrnes is one of my favorite player not on the Redsox. He gives so much effort. The D-Backs must be very thankful to have him back.
