MLB Who is the best closer in baseball today?

This probably turns into a homer-fest, but let's try it out and see.
    Marshall: MILSWANCAs?
    Ted
: Wait, I can get this. Mothers I'd like to sleep with and never call again.
    Barney: Circle gets the square!

The 2074 MSL NL Gold Glove Recipient at Third Base.

Kinda vague. But if we're going by one player I would choose to nail down a big game for my team, I'd still pick Rivera.

In terms of closers for the next 5 years and beyond, probably Papelbon, Broxton, Soria and maybe Nathan (don't remember how old he is nowadays, but if he's under 35 then place him above Soria and maybe even Broxton).

No Trevor Hoffman? I'll still take him over several of the closers on the list.

I'm going to give Ryan Franklin my vote because of his last couple of months. He has been lights out.

Re: Who is the best closer in baseball today?

Yeah, for one big game I'd put Hoffman up there next to Mo or atleast near the top.

Bobby Jenks is going to eat his way out of the league, Ryan Franklin is a prop in Dave Duncan's magic act as far as I'm concerned-- though for what they re-signed him for if he can pitch half as good as he has this year next through the duration of his extension, it'd be worth it anyway...

Andrew Bailey looks like he could be really good, but my uneducated guess is when Devine gets healthy next year, he's probably going to get a chance to earn the CL job back.

There's also still guys like Ardsma, Marmol, Frank Francisco, etc... pitchers who have the stuff to close by all means, but haven't gotten the mental piece quite down yet. Although Aardsma seems to have turned the corner this year, I'd like to see a repeat performance next season atleast before I buy it.

Oh yeah, one more guy who I've always liked, still do for that matter, but if he wasn't injured last season he'd probably still be considered elite. Billy Wagner... he's overlooked when talking about elite closers over the past 10-15 years, but his numbers are right up there with Hoffman & Rivera's, minus Rivera's playoff success... but it will be awhile before another CL accumulates postseason stats similar to Rivera, if ever again...
For what it's worth, I think Wagner gets a shot to close next year and does well.

Re: Who is the best closer in baseball today?

I'd take Mo Rivera everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Still very un-hittable, posts a great K/9, has blown only TWO saves over the last two seasons, pitches in a tough tough division... and he is rocking it at age 39 in a homer prone new Yankee Stadium.

Think about this for a second, outside of 2007, since 2003 Rivera has posted a sub 2 ERA in each of those seasons and is on pace to do it again.

    Rivera is still the king.

If Andrew Bailey's on the poll Heath Bell should be on it as well.

I wouldn't vote for either, just saying if we're going to consider Bailey then Bell deserves consideration as well.

So awesome that as early as back in 2003, this answer to this poll question was Eric Gagne.

    Bailey, 1.88 ERA and 21 saves, all-star
    Bell, 2.09 ERA and 34 saves, all-star

Yeah, I can see it. But, there's an other option. Hence forth, other..options..not..listed. As grumpytalk has already pointed out, Trevor Hoffman could have been on the list. J.P. Howell could have been on the list. Maybe Frank Francisco or CJ Wilson. But, there is the..other..option.

Scott Downs could have been on this list earlier this season. Thats sad.

Went with "Big Daddy" Joe. Always liked his effort no matter what the situation.

The ageless one Rivera is still the best, but I really like this young guy of the Royals Joakim Soria.

Well, that didn't take long for Hoffman to go from "I'm back" to "I'm done."

And I would kill to have The Mexicutioner.

Re: Who is the best closer in baseball today?

Before the season began I would have chosen Kansas City Royals Joakim Soria as the best closer in the game today. He may not be the best of all time, but right now or at least at the beginning of the season he was shutting down games like crazy. Now lately he has lost his job, but I really think he will get it back soon. I still voted for him.
