White Sox Seeking Saturday Opinions (8/15): Would you have traded for Alex Rios?

Alex Rios no doubt has a large contract and the White Sox took a huge pricey gamble on a player who has not performed with the bat for quite a while. He is however a high upside player still who has youth on his side, the ability to play the challenging CF position, and has performed in the past at the MLB level.

Given the contract, his current performance, his past performance, etc, would you have made the exact same deal Kenny Williams did to acquire Rios from the Blue Jays?

I voted no if it were me. If I were Kenny Williams, then maybe. He likes to take risks (Peavy deal being another) and had the green light from the owner to add payroll so why not I suppose? It could pay off.

If I were running a team, I wouldn't have unless I truly thought it would put my team over the top. I wouldn't have done it just to get to the playoffs. This isn't OOTP where anything can, and usually does, happen in the playoffs. The goal is to win it all, not just make the playoffs. He's only 28 and could turn it back around, but I think the risk may outweigh the benefit in this case.

This is essentially a FA pickup for Williams with having to give compensation. While im not sure if they have the consistency to win the Central this year. Only time will tell if can get his groove back.

The funny part is that Rios was the key guy who the Blue Jays wanted to give for Lincecum couple of years ago.

Yes, they won't have to spend a bunch of money to resign the old guys in the off season.

I am probably in the minority here, and my bias is fairly obvious, but Rios is a solid defender in CF with a good bat and the potential to get better. Obviously if Rios was living up to his contract, no team would have had a chance to make the deal, it's a case of buying low with some high risk with the potential for high reward, and with the Sox needing an OF and a hitter for next season and beyond, I think it's a good move.
