Nationals DK's favorite Expos player returns to the fold

Livan signs deal, returns to Nationals | nationals.com: News

CHICAGO -- The Nationals signed right-hander Livan Hernandez to a Major League contract on Tuesday night, six days after the Mets gave the veteran his unconditional release.

Hernandez, who went 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA for New York, will be in the rotation and serve as a mentor for Washington's young starting pitchers.

In fact, he will start against the Cubs on Wednesday night, while right-hander J.D. Martin and left-hander John Lannan will be pushed back a day and pitch on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
6 years later the prodigal son returns...or something like that. I'm Livan wasn't your favorite Expos player DK, but still. They brought him on to be a mentor to the young pitchers and reduce their innings load down the stretch.

Now Livan says he'd like to stay beyond the rest of this season.

The Nationals will surely explore the free agent market this offseason, looking for a veteran starter, but Hernandez could be an option.

"That's what I want. I'd love to be here next year," Hernandez said. "It's something I've been waiting for, coming to DC, the last three years."
